Venus in the 2nd house places the planet of beauty, pleasure and harmony in the house of family, speech, food and accumulated wealth. It tends to give a pleasant voice, a taste for good food and fine possessions, and a family life in which comfort and hospitality matter, often with earnings that come through agreeable or artistic work.
Of all the houses, this is one where Venus feels naturally at home. In the kalapurusha scheme the second sign is Taurus, which Venus owns, so the themes of the 2nd house (what we keep, what we eat, how we speak, whom we call family) are already close to Venus's own nature.
What Venus brings to the house of wealth
The second house, dhana bhava, governs family and lineage, speech, the face and eyes in traditional body mapping, food, early learning and the wealth a person gathers and holds. Its natural karaka is Jupiter, which Venus treats as neutral. Where Jupiter in the 2nd suggests wisdom and a large, rule-bound family, Venus suggests a warm, sociable household that likes to eat well and live gracefully.
Venus shapes each 2nd-house matter in its own way:

That term belongs to the classical calculation of longevity: the 3rd and 8th are the houses of life, and the 2nd and 7th, twelfth from each, are called marakas. It is a technical label, not a prediction, and a benefic like Venus in the 2nd is not read as a threat to anyone.
Venus has no digbala question here; it gains directional strength only in the 4th and loses it in the 10th. And because Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun, with Venus in the 2nd the Sun is somewhere between the 12th and the 4th. For Taurus lagna the lagna lord itself (also ruling the 6th) sits in Gemini, a friend's sign, so the self is invested in speech and family. In Cancer (for Gemini lagna) and Leo (for Cancer lagna) Venus sits with an enemy lord; in Scorpio, Sagittarius and Aries its sign lord is neutral.
What Venus aspects from the 2nd
Venus's only aspect is the 7th, and from the 2nd it falls on the 8th house: inheritance, joint and hidden resources, long-term change and longevity. The 8th is also the 2nd counted from the 7th, so it represents the partner's family and wealth. Venus looking at it is traditionally a gentle sign for resources that come through marriage, in-laws or shared holdings, and it softens the more abrupt themes of the 8th. Venus in the 2nd shows the flavour of family and wealth; the lord of the 2nd shows its strength. A strong 2nd lord, well placed in a kendra or trikona, lets Venus's taste for comfort rest on real resources. A weak or afflicted 2nd lord may mean the taste is larger than the purse.
Then consider what Venus brings in from its own houses. For Scorpio lagna it rules the 7th and 12th, so partnership and expenditure both flow into the family's finances. Traditional authors broadly agree that a benefic in the 2nd is favourable for wealth and speech, and they commonly associate Venus here with eloquent or poetic expression, good food and prosperity through pleasant means. They also note that an afflicted Venus can turn the same appetite into extravagance. These are tendencies to weigh against the rest of the chart.
Common misreadings
- "Venus in the 2nd means you will be rich." It describes a relationship with money and comfort; the 2nd lord, the 11th house and the dasha decide how much.
- Fearing the word maraka. It is a technical category used inside longevity calculations and is not read alone.
- Ignoring the aspect on the 8th. Much of this placement's value shows up through a partner, in-laws or shared resources, not only personal earnings.
- Reading only from the lagna. Many astrologers repeat the reading from the Moon sign; Venus 2nd from the Moon adds weight to the same themes.
