Venus in the 7th house places the natural karaka of marriage in the house of marriage, partners and contracts. It tends to give a warm, attractive manner in relationships, a strong wish for partnership and a spouse described as charming or refined, though tradition also asks whether the karaka sitting in its own house can expect too much from it.
No other planet has quite this relationship with the 7th. Venus is the house's significator, the natural 7th sign Libra is Venus's own sign and moolatrikona, and the whole kama side of life, desire, attraction and pleasure with another person, is Venus's territory. So this page is less about a planet visiting a house and more about a planet sitting in the centre of its own subject.
The karaka in its own house
The 7th house covers the spouse, marriage, business partnerships, contracts, clients and open dealings with the public. Venus signifies love, attraction, beauty, harmony and agreement. When it sits here the themes do not simply blend, they concentrate:
- Partnership as a need. People with Venus in the 7th often feel most themselves with another person. Relationships, whether marriage or business, tend to be central to how life unfolds.
- The partner's nature. Tradition describes the spouse as graceful, pleasant, fond of comfort or artistic, and the bond as one with real attraction.
- Diplomacy in dealings. Venus is the planet of agreement. Contracts, negotiations, client work and any role that needs a pleasant manner with the public tend to go well.
- Desire and its limits. A strong Venus in the 7th can make pleasure and romance a large part of life; a weak or afflicted one can make the person look to a partner for more than any partner can give.
Because Venus is the 7th house's karaka, astrologers often mention the maxim karako bhava nashaya, that a karaka in its own house harms that house. It is a later rule of thumb, not a law, and it is applied with many exceptions: it is usually set aside when Venus is in its own or exalted sign, and it is commonly read gently, as high ideals about love rather than any harm to marriage.
The 7th is a kendra, so Venus here acts visibly, and natural benefics in kendras are classically welcome. It is also one of the two maraka houses, a technical label from longevity calculation that says nothing about marriage. Venus has no digbala question here: its full strength is in the 4th, its weakest in the 10th. Because Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun, the Sun will fall somewhere from the 5th to the 9th house.
How the sign changes it
Houses are counted whole-sign from the lagna, and many astrologers repeat the reading from the Moon sign. Your lagna decides which sign falls in the 7th:
- Aries lagna. The 7th is Libra, Venus's own sign and moolatrikona to 15 degrees. Venus rules the 2nd and 7th, so the 7th lord is at home, and Malavya yoga forms. The karaka maxim is at its weakest here, because the house lord protects its own house.
- Virgo lagna. The 7th is Pisces, where Venus is exalted, while ruling the 2nd and 9th. Malavya yoga forms again, and fortune, family and marriage are closely linked.
- Scorpio lagna. The 7th is Taurus, Venus's own sign; Venus rules the 7th and 12th, and Malavya yoga forms. The 12th lordship often adds a partner connected with distant places or a love of privacy in marriage.
- Pisces lagna. The 7th is Virgo, where Venus is debilitated, while ruling the 3rd and 8th. Relationships may be approached with analysis, care or service rather than ease, and neecha-bhanga conditions are checked before any conclusion.
- Capricorn and Aquarius lagna. Venus is the yogakaraka for both, but sits in an enemy's sign: Cancer for Capricorn lagna and Leo for Aquarius lagna. A yogakaraka in the 7th is still commonly read as fortune and status that come through a spouse or partnerships.
In Capricorn and Aquarius (Cancer and Leo lagna) Venus is with its friend Saturn, which tends to make commitments steady; in Gemini (Sagittarius lagna) it is with its friend Mercury.
The aspect on the lagna
From the 7th, Venus's only drishti falls on the 1st house: the self, the body, appearance and temperament. A natural benefic aspecting the lagna is traditionally a pleasant signature, often read as charm, good looks or at least attention to appearance, and an easy social manner. It also means that the person's sense of self is shaped by partnership: the 7th looks back at the 1st, and who they are with tends to change who they become.
The 7th lord and Venus's own lordship
For Aries and Scorpio lagna, Venus is the 7th lord in its own house, and the reading is simple. For every other lagna, find the 7th lord: its sign, house and strength decide how far Venus's promise is carried out. A strong 7th lord gives Venus a solid structure to fill with affection; a weak one may leave warm feelings without stable arrangements.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the principles used here: the 7th as the house of the spouse, Venus as its karaka, the kendra and maraka groupings, Venus's dignities, its 7th aspect and Malavya yoga for Venus in a kendra in its own or exaltation sign. Traditional authors who give house-by-house results tend to describe Venus in the 7th as a passionate nature, an attractive or well-born spouse and enjoyment of pleasures, while some add cautions about excess desire or strain in marriage under the karaka principle. Those statements come from reading one planet alone; later astrologers weigh them against dignity, the 7th lord and the navamsa.
Common misreadings
- Assuming a perfect marriage. Venus in the 7th promises attraction and interest in partnership, not a guaranteed outcome. The 7th lord and navamsa carry at least as much weight.
- Treating karako bhava nashaya as a verdict. It is a heuristic with many exceptions; for Aries, Virgo and Scorpio lagna Venus is strong enough that most astrologers set it aside.
- Reading only the rashi chart. The navamsa is the classical chart of marriage, and Venus's navamsa sign matters here.
- Using Western houses. Tropical and quadrant-house charts can place Venus in the 6th or 8th; these pages use sidereal, whole-sign houses.
