Rahu in the 7th house places the node of desire and the unfamiliar in the house of marriage, partnership and open dealings with others. Its most common signature is a strong appetite for relationship combined with a pull towards partners, associates or markets that lie outside one's own background.
Because Rahu here always puts Ketu in the lagna, this placement is really a statement about the self-and-other axis: a person who is somewhat detached about themselves and intensely invested in the people they join with.
What Rahu does in the house of the partner
Rahu magnifies whatever it touches and draws in the foreign, the new and the unconventional. The 7th house, yuvati or kalatra, governs the spouse, marriage, business partners, contracts and the public one faces. Its natural karaka is Venus, and Rahu is not a karaka of this house, so there is no karaka-in-its-own-house question to weigh here.
In practice, traditional and modern readings of this pairing describe:
- A partner from a different culture, city, faith, age group or social circle, or a relationship that surprises the family.
- A great deal of energy spent on relationships: longing for the right partner, sometimes idealising them, sometimes feeling that no partner is quite enough.
- Talent for deals, trade and public-facing work, especially with foreigners, large organisations or new industries.
- Occasional confusion about what the other person really wants, since Rahu clouds as readily as it magnifies.
The 7th is a kendra, so a node here acts openly and shows in daily life. It is also a maraka house, a technical label used when timing health and longevity in dasha work. That label says nothing on its own about the reader, and this page does not use it for prediction. The nodes take no digbala in any house.
The sign and its lord carry the reading
Rahu owns no sign in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It gives the results of its dispositor, the lord of the sign it occupies, and of the planets that join or aspect it. In the 7th, that dispositor is always the 7th lord, so the strength and placement of the 7th lord is the single most useful thing to check.
Rahu's exaltation is disputed: many texts give Taurus, others Gemini, and the debilitation is taken as the opposite sign, Scorpio or Sagittarius. Using the whole-sign houses counted from the lagna:
- Scorpio lagna puts Rahu in Taurus, and Sagittarius lagna puts it in Gemini: signs some traditions call exalted, often read as a practical, prospering Rahu in partnership.
- Taurus lagna puts Rahu in Scorpio, and Gemini lagna puts it in Sagittarius: signs some call debilitated, read as more intensity and misjudgement in relationships unless Mars or Jupiter is strong.
- Signs of Mercury, Venus and Saturn are commonly treated as friendly ground; the Moon's Cancer (for Capricorn lagna) and the Sun's Leo (for Aquarius lagna) as less comfortable.
Aspects and Ketu in the lagna
Rahu's 7th aspect, generally accepted, falls on the 1st house, the very place where Ketu sits. Some traditions also give the nodes 5th and 9th aspects, which from here would reach the 11th and 3rd; others do not, and nothing here depends on them.
The axis matters more than the aspect. With Ketu in the 1st, the person may be modest or unsure about their own image while pouring ambition into the partnership. Many astrologers read this as someone who finds themselves through others, and who does best when the relationship has room for both people's growth.
The 7th lord and Rahu's borrowed lordship
Rahu rules no house for any lagna, so its functional role comes from the planet it serves. Three examples from the lagna table:
- Aries lagna: Rahu in Libra, disposited by Venus, which rules the 2nd and 7th for Aries. A well-placed Venus tends to turn this into a sociable, attractive partnership and gains through the spouse or business alliances.
- Scorpio lagna: Rahu in Taurus, disposited by Venus as lord of the 7th and 12th. A strong Venus can give a partner from far away or a marriage that involves living abroad.
- Sagittarius lagna: Rahu in Gemini, disposited by Mercury, lord of the 7th and 10th. Partnership and career overlap here; business with a spouse or a public career built on contracts is a common reading.
The Parashari rule that a node in a kendra joined with a trikona lord can give raja-yoga-like results applies here too, since the 7th is a kendra. A Rahu in the 7th with a strong 5th or 9th lord is read very differently from a Rahu alone.
In Rahu's dasha
The placement shows most clearly in the 18-year Rahu mahadasha, in Rahu antardashas within other periods, and in the dasha of the 7th lord. With Rahu in the 7th, these are years when partnership takes centre stage: a marriage or engagement, a business alliance, work with foreign clients, or a sharp change in how one relates to others.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra supplies the principles used here: the significations of the 7th house, Rahu acting like Saturn, the nodes following their dispositor, and the dasha scheme. Phaladeepika is among the texts that give results for Rahu in each house. For the 7th, traditional authors tend to describe trouble or loss connected with the spouse and dealings with unconventional partners. These are stark, general statements about an unsupported Rahu; later astrologers soften them considerably when the 7th lord is strong or Jupiter or Venus aspects the house.
Common misreadings
- Treating it as a marriage verdict. Rahu in the 7th describes the texture of partnership, not whether it will last. Countless stable marriages have it.
