Tradition counts it among Rahu's best placements, because here the planet's hunger and cleverness are spent on overcoming obstacles rather than on disturbing the rest of life.
The 6th is a difficult house to have strong matters in, but a good house for a malefic to sit in. Rahu is the clearest example of that paradox.
Why tradition favours this placement
Rahu wants, schemes and refuses to accept limits. The 6th house is the house of limits: enemies, competition, illness, debt, the daily grind. Put a planet that will not give up into the house of hurdles and the hurdles tend to lose.
The 6th belongs to two groups at once. It is a dusthana, one of the three difficult houses (6, 8, 12), and an upachaya, a house of growth through effort. Classical rules welcome malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, and a malefic in the 6th is said to harm the house's negative significations, the enemies and obstacles themselves.
The natural karakas of the 6th are Mars and Saturn. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says Rahu acts like Saturn, so here the node sits in a house whose own karaka it resembles, which is part of why it feels at home. The nodes take no digbala.

- Competition: an edge in contests, exams, litigation, elections and markets; an instinct for a rival's weak point.

Phaladeepika is among the texts that give Rahu's results house by house. For the 6th, traditional authors broadly agree that Rahu destroys enemies and brings strength, wealth and long life, with some adding trouble from hidden or unusual sources. It is one of the most favourable Rahu placements in the classical tradition.
Common misreadings
- Fearing it because the 6th is a dusthana. For a malefic, the 6th is one of the better houses; the dusthana label describes the house's matters, not Rahu's strength there.
- Assuming no enemies at all. The reading is that rivals are overcome, not that they never appear.
- Reading health predictions into it. The 6th covers illness as a subject; no single placement predicts a condition.
- Skipping the lagna. Houses here are counted whole-sign from the sidereal lagna, and many astrologers repeat the reading from the Moon sign. The 6th lord changes with the lagna, and with it most of the result.
