The 6th is a difficult house for a gentle planet, and tradition says so openly. Yet it is also a house of growth and of service, and the Moon here frequently belongs to nurses, carers, cooks, teachers, counsellors and anyone who looks after people day after day.

The 6th house, ari or ripu bhava, covers enemies and competition, debts, illness and its cure, service and employment, daily routine, and small animals and pets. Its karakas are Mars and Saturn. When the Moon, signifier of the mind, mother and public, is placed here:
- Care as work. The instinct to nourish goes into service. Many people with this placement feel most useful when they are helping, feeding or nursing someone.
- A mind that meets problems. The Moon absorbs whatever it touches, and in the 6th it touches difficulties. The person may think about work long after hours, which makes clear routines valuable.
- Feelings in disputes. Conflicts are rarely impersonal for this Moon. It wins more often by patience and by winning people over than by force.
- Routine and wellbeing. The 6th rules daily habits, and the Moon rules the body's fluids in classical symbolism. Traditional readings connect this placement with sensitivity to diet and rest. That is symbolism, not a health reading.
The 6th is a dusthana, one of the three difficult houses (6, 8, 12), and also an upachaya, a house of growth. Malefics are classically welcome in the 6th because they overcome opponents; a benefic like the Moon is less combative, and tradition says the Moon in particular should be read with care in the 6th, 8th and 12th. What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the principles: the 6th as the house of enemies, debts and disease; the dusthana and upachaya groupings; and the Moon's dignities and aspect. Traditional authors who list house results are fairly stark about the Moon in the 6th, associating it with opponents, a delicate constitution or a restless mind, and they soften this markedly when the Moon is full or strong. Those older lists were written for a planet read in isolation, and modern readers set them beside the phase, sign and 6th lord.
Common misreadings
- Treating it as an illness prediction. The 6th includes illness and its cure; this placement often shows people who heal and care for others.
- Forgetting upachaya. The house improves with time; early struggles are not the whole story.
- Ignoring viparita raja yoga. For three lagnas the Moon here is a dusthana lord in a dusthana, which classical rules treat quite differently.
- Mixing systems. Tropical Western houses are counted differently, so the Moon may sit elsewhere there.
