Ketu in the 6th house places the node of detachment in the house of rivals, debts, disputes, illness and daily service. Traditional astrology counts it among Ketu's stronger positions: a cutting, indifferent planet in a house where things need cutting, it tends to help a person outlast opposition and deal with strain without being consumed by it.
The feeling is less of winning fights than of not quite taking part in them. Opponents lose interest, quarrels fade, and the person moves on.
Why the 6th suits Ketu
The 6th house, called ari or ripu bhava, holds enemies and competitors, loans and debts, litigation, illness and its cure, servants and employees, and the routine work of every day. It is both a dusthana, a house of difficulty, and an upachaya, a house of growth that improves with time and effort. Parashari astrology welcomes natural malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, because their sharpness is used against the house's troubles rather than against the person.
Ketu is said to act like Mars, and Mars is one of the karakas of this house along with Saturn. That kinship is part of why the placement is praised. Typical readings include:
- Victory through patience and detachment rather than aggression; rivals who give up.
- A capacity for careful, repetitive, unglamorous work: service, healing, analysis, craft.
- Debts or disputes that close suddenly, sometimes in unexpected ways.
- Complaints of the body that are vague or hard to diagnose, with good powers of recovery.
- Interest in medicine, alternative healing, or research into causes.
Nodes take no digbala, and Ketu is not the karaka of the 6th, so there is no question of the karaka harming its own house here.
The sign in the 6th and Ketu's dignity
Ketu owns no sign in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It gives the results of its sign lord and of the planets it joins, so in this house the 6th lord is its main voice.
The texts do not agree on Ketu's exaltation (Scorpio or Sagittarius) or its debilitation (Taurus or Gemini). These four signs fall in the 6th for:
- Gemini lagna: Scorpio in the 6th. Scorpio is also the sign some authors give Ketu as co-ruler, so the node is read as strong here, with Mars as its lord.
- Cancer lagna: Sagittarius in the 6th, the other exaltation candidate, under Jupiter.
- Sagittarius lagna: Taurus in the 6th, a proposed debilitation; Venus decides whether routine work feels heavy.
- Capricorn lagna: Gemini in the 6th, the other proposed debilitation; a worried mind about small things, eased by a strong Mercury.
A "debilitated" malefic in the 6th is not necessarily weak in results, since the house itself welcomes hardness. This is another reason to lean on the 6th lord rather than on the label.
The 12th house aspect and Rahu opposite
Ketu's 7th aspect, which is generally accepted, falls on the 12th house of expense, sleep, foreign lands and retreat. Whether the nodes also cast 5th and 9th aspects is disputed between traditions, and this page does not rely on them.
Ketu in the 6th always pairs with Rahu in the 12th. The 6-12 axis runs between service and surrender, between the daily fight and the letting go at the end of the day. The 6th lord and three lagnas
Ketu rules no house for any lagna, so whether it acts as a functional friend or not depends on the planet that owns the 6th and on its placement.
- Gemini lagna: Ketu in Scorpio, dispositor Mars, lord of the 6th and 11th. Both houses are upachayas, so a strong Mars makes this a notably competitive placement, good for contests, sport and work against deadlines.
- Cancer lagna: Ketu in Sagittarius, dispositor Jupiter, lord of the 6th and 9th. Service joins fortune; teaching, counselling or legal work can grow from this.
- Leo lagna: Ketu in Capricorn, dispositor Saturn, lord of the 6th and 7th. Partners and competitors may overlap, and Saturn's strength shows whether that stays businesslike.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra is the source for the principles used here: the significations of the 6th, the welcome given to malefics in upachaya houses, and the rule that nodes follow their dispositors. Phaladeepika, among the texts that list Ketu's results in each house, is generally read as favourable for this placement, and traditional authors tend to associate Ketu in the 6th with defeat of enemies, fame among relatives or community, and a generous nature. As always, these assume a Ketu that is not badly afflicted.
Common misreadings
- Treating "6th house" as "illness". The 6th shows how a person meets trouble; Ketu here often shows resilience.
- Forgetting the 12th. Rahu there can explain spending or sleeplessness that is wrongly blamed on Ketu.
- Reading dignity too literally. A "debilitated" Ketu in an upachaya can still give strong results.
