The Sun in the 7th house places the planet of the self, authority and pride in the house of marriage, partners and contracts. Tradition reads it as a strong-willed partner or a relationship in which two centres have to learn to share one stage, and much depends on whether the Sun stands in Libra, its sign of fall, or in a sign where it is at ease.

The self meeting the other
The Sun signifies the soul, the father, authority, confidence and a sense of purpose. The 7th house is the house of the other person: spouse, business partner, client, even the open opponent. Put the two together and the question the placement keeps asking is who leads.
- A partner with presence. Traditional readings describe the spouse as dignified, proud, capable, sometimes from a family of standing or with a link to government or administration.
- Ego in the relationship. The Sun does not share easily. People with this placement often learn, sometimes the hard way, that a partnership is not a stage for one person. When that lesson settles, the same Sun gives loyalty and a strong sense of duty toward the partner.
- Identity through others. The person may come to know themselves through close relationships, or find that partners mirror their own will back at them.
- Public dealings. The 7th also rules dealings with the public and formal agreements. The Sun here can suit work with government contracts, negotiation or representing an institution.
The 7th is a kendra, so the Sun acts visibly here, and it is one of the two maraka houses, a technical label used in longevity calculation that says nothing about marriage by itself. The Sun is not the karaka of the 7th (Venus is), and it has neither full nor zero digbala here: its strongest direction is the 10th and its weakest the 4th. Symbolically the 7th is the western horizon, where the Sun sets, and the natural 7th sign of the zodiac is Libra, the Sun's debilitation. Both images point the same way: in this house the Sun's light is asked to turn toward someone else.
The Sun is a mild natural malefic. As the only occupant of the 7th it tends to add heat rather than sweetness; with Jupiter's aspect, or with a strong Venus elsewhere, that heat is much gentler.
How the sign changes the Sun here
The sign in your 7th depends on your lagna, and that sign sets the Sun's dignity:
- Libra lagna: the 7th is Aries, where the Sun is exalted (uchcha). The partner or partnerships tend to bring confidence and standing. The Sun rules the 11th here, so gains through partners and associates are a natural theme.
- Aquarius lagna: the 7th is Leo, the Sun's own sign, and its moolatrikona from 0 to 20 degrees. The 7th lord sits in its own house, which classically protects the matters of that house, though the partner may be the more commanding of the two.
- Aries lagna: the 7th is Libra, where the Sun is debilitated (neecha). The Sun rules the 5th, so children, creativity and judgement are tied to partnership. A debilitated Sun here often asks the person to lead by cooperation. Neecha-bhanga conditions, such as a strong Venus, can soften it considerably.
In the signs of its friends (Scorpio of Mars, Sagittarius and Pisces of Jupiter, Cancer of the Moon) the Sun is comfortable. In Capricorn and Aquarius, Saturn's signs, and Taurus, a sign of Venus, it is in an enemy's house and tends to struggle a little more for the same result. Gemini and Virgo, Mercury's signs, are neutral.
The one aspect: the Sun looks back at the lagna
The Sun casts only the standard 7th-house aspect (drishti), and from the 7th that falls on the 1st house. The partner's nature and the self are therefore tied together. A well-placed Sun here lends the person dignity and a certain bearing; a strained one can make them sensitive about how they are seen. Planets in the lagna receiving this aspect are coloured by the Sun's heat and seriousness.
The 7th lord and the Sun's own lordship
Two further questions decide the result. First, where is the lord of the 7th sign and how strong is it? If the Sun sits in Scorpio for Taurus lagna, Mars as 7th lord carries much of the story. Second, which house does the Sun rule for your lagna? It owns only Leo, so it rules exactly one house:
- Taurus lagna: the Sun rules the 4th and sits in Scorpio, a friend's sign. Home, property and the mother's world connect with partnership; the spouse may be closely involved in domestic matters.
- Leo lagna: the Sun is the lagnesh, placed in Aquarius, an enemy sign. The whole life turns toward relationships, and the person invests their identity in the partner, sometimes more than is comfortable.
- Cancer lagna: the Sun rules the 2nd, another maraka house, and sits in Capricorn. Family, money and speech flow into partnerships; business dealings and marriage may both touch the family's resources.
The Sun in the 7th during its dasha
The placement shows most clearly in the Sun mahadasha, six years long, and in the Sun's antardasha inside other periods, and also in the dasha of the 7th lord. These periods often bring a partnership, a contract or a public role into focus. For some it is the time of a marriage or a formal business association; for others it is a period in which the balance within an existing relationship is renegotiated. What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra supplies the principles used here: the 7th as the house of the spouse, the Sun's dignities, its single 7th aspect and the logic of house lordship. Traditional authors who list results house by house give the Sun in the 7th a stern reading, speaking of friction with the spouse, dealings with rulers that do not always go well, and restlessness. Those descriptions assume the Sun alone. Later practice weighs them against sign, the 7th lord, Venus as karaka and the navamsa, which frequently turn the reading toward a proud but steady partnership.
Common misreadings
- Calling it a marriage dosha. It is not one, and it has nothing to do with Manglik dosha, which concerns Mars.
- Predicting separation from one planet. The Sun describes the temperature of a relationship, not its outcome. Venus, the 7th lord and the navamsa count for at least as much.
- Forgetting the lagna. For Libra rising this Sun is exalted, for Aquarius rising it is in its own sign, and for Aries rising it is in fall. These are three different placements that share a house number.
- Reading from a Western chart. Tropical signs and unequal houses may put your Sun somewhere else; this page uses whole-sign, sidereal houses.
