The Sun in the 8th house places the planet of light, authority and self-display in the house of hidden matters, sudden change, inheritance and longevity. Tradition treats it as a difficult seat for the Sun, since the 8th conceals what the Sun wants to show, yet the same placement often produces people who are strong in crises, drawn to research and quietly influential behind the scenes.

The Sun wants to be seen: it signifies identity, recognition, the father and the state. Authors who list the Sun's results house by house describe the 8th stiffly, with few friends, reduced wealth and concerns about the eyes or vitality. Those lines treat the Sun alone; modern readers weigh them against the lagna, the Sun's dignity and the 8th lord before drawing any conclusion.
Common misreadings
- Reading the 8th as a death house. Longevity is calculated from many factors, never from one planet in the 8th. The house also rules research, legacies and renewal.
- Missing the viparita yogas. For Capricorn, Virgo and Pisces rising, this Sun is a dusthana lord in a dusthana, which often works in the person's favour.
- Judging the father from one placement. The 9th house and its lord are read first.
- Ignoring the aspect. The Sun here always looks at the 2nd, so money and family speech are part of the picture.
