What the classical texts say
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names the 8th as the house of longevity and Saturn as its karaka, and it gives the lordship rules used above. Traditional authors who list planet-by-house results tend to describe Saturn in the 8th with long life on one hand and hardship, low status or ailments on the other. Those were blunt, isolated readings. Modern practice weighs them against Saturn's sign, its lordship and the rest of the chart, and never treats them as forecasts about health.
Common misreadings
- Confusing it with ashtama Shani. The 8th-from-Moon Saturn transit, part of dhaiya, is a passing phase; natal Saturn in the 8th house is a lifelong trait counted from the lagna.
- Reading dusthana as disaster. A malefic in the 8th is not automatically worse than a benefic there, and Saturn is this house's own karaka.
- Forgetting the lagna. For Gemini and Cancer rising, Saturn rules the 8th itself; for Taurus and Libra it is a yogakaraka. Same house, very different stories.
- Ignoring aspects. What Saturn does to the 10th, 2nd and 5th often matters as much as the 8th.
