- The natural sign. In the kalapurusha scheme the first sign is Aries, ruled by Mars, which is neutral to Venus. The lagna asks for initiative and physical energy; Venus answers with grace and a preference for ease. The result is often a person who gets things done by winning people over.
- Closeness to the Sun. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so with Venus in the lagna the Sun sits in the 11th, 12th, 1st, 2nd or 3rd. - Capricorn and Aquarius lagna. Venus is the yogakaraka, ruling a kendra and a trikona (the 5th and 10th for Capricorn, the 4th and 9th for Aquarius), and sits in the sign of its friend Saturn. Many astrologers count this among the best places Venus can occupy for these lagnas.
In Gemini lagna Venus is with its friend Mercury; in Cancer and Leo it sits in the signs of its enemies, the Moon and the Sun; in Aries, Scorpio and Sagittarius its sign lord is neutral.
What Venus aspects from the 1st house
Venus has only the standard 7th-house drishti. From the lagna it falls on the 7th, the house of marriage and partnership, which is also the house Venus naturally signifies. The person tends to look outward for a companion, to value partnership highly and to bring courtesy into their dealings with others. What the classical texts say
Phaladeepika associates Venus in the lagna with a handsome appearance, happiness and a long life, and more generally with enjoyment of pleasures. Other traditional authors add skill in the arts and a pleasing way of speaking, and some warn of over-attachment to pleasure when Venus is poorly placed. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra supplies the principles used above: the lagna as the body and self, Venus's dignities, its 7th aspect and its role as yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius.

Common misreadings
- "Venus in the lagna means vanity." Care for appearance is one expression of it; hospitality, fairness and artistic taste are just as common.
- Leaving out the sign. Venus rising in Pisces and Venus rising in Virgo are very different people, even though the house is the same.
- Treating it as a marriage guarantee. The aspect on the 7th helps, but the 7th lord and the navamsa decide how partnership actually unfolds.
- Using a tropical chart. A Western chart may put Venus in a different house entirely. Many astrologers also repeat the reading from the Moon sign, which can shift the emphasis.
