This page describes sidereal Virgo (Kanya), the sign used in Vedic charts, which is tied to the stars through the Lahiri ayanamsa and lies about 24 degrees behind the Virgo of Western, tropical astrology. So a Western "Venus in Virgo" is often Venus in Leo in the kundli, and a Western Libra Venus can turn out to be here. In the sidereal chart Venus in Virgo is debilitated: the planet of love and beauty sits in the sign of analysis and service, and affection tends to be shown through care, precision and practical help rather than easy romance.
Why Venus struggles in the maiden's sign
Venus is the karaka of love, marriage, art, beauty, comfort and vehicles. Virgo is earth, dual (dvisvabhava), even and feminine, the 6th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the waist and intestines and the south. Its symbol is a maiden in a boat holding grain and fire: harvest, skill, careful use of resources.
Venus wants to enjoy; Virgo wants to examine. That is the traditional reason for the debility. Common tendencies:
- Love as service. Doing things for the partner: organising, fixing, nursing, remembering the details.
- High standards. A critical eye for flaws, in art, in appearance and sometimes in people close by.
- Craft over glamour. Skill in fine work: tailoring, editing, design detail, health and beauty professions.
- Hesitation in pleasure. Guilt about indulgence, or difficulty relaxing into affection.
- The gift inside it. Modesty, reliability and a quiet devotion that shows in deeds.
Dignity: debilitation and neecha-bhanga
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Virgo as Venus's sign of debility, with the deepest point at 27°. The whole sign from 0° to 30° counts as debilitated (neecha), strongest near that degree. It is the exact mirror of Pisces, where Venus is exalted at 27°.
There is a curious twist. Mercury, the lord of Virgo, is Venus's friend, and the friendship is mutual. Venus is debilitated in a friend's house, which is one reason many astrologers read this placement more gently than some other debilitations.
Before any conclusion, the classics ask us to check neecha-bhanga, the cancellation of debility. Commonly cited conditions include:
- Mercury, the lord of Virgo, in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon.
- Jupiter, lord of Pisces where Venus is exalted, in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon.
- Mercury, which is itself exalted in Virgo, joining or aspecting Venus; this is often quoted as a strong combination.
- Venus well placed in the navamsa.
Schools differ on how many conditions are needed and how much they lift Venus; some also speak of neech bhang raj yoga. See the neech bhang raj yoga guide for a calm overview.
Venus stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun, so the Sun will be in Virgo or within two signs of it. No Malavya yoga forms here.
Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and Chitra
- Uttara Phalguni, padas 2 to 4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): commitment and duty. The Sun is Venus's enemy, so love may feel dutiful or formal.
- Hasta, all four padas (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): the skilled hand. Craft, healing touch and clever work; affection shows in making things.
- Chitra, padas 1 and 2 (23°20′–30°, lord Mars): the architect's jewel. The deepest debility at 27° falls here, yet Chitra is also a nakshatra of beauty and design, so aesthetic talent can be striking.
The aspect on Pisces
From Virgo, Venus casts its 7th drishti on Pisces, its sign of exaltation. The planet looks across at the place where it is strongest, and tradition often reads this as someone who serves in order to reach an ideal of love, compassion or devotion.
By lagna
Virgo is the natural 6th house, so Venus in the 6th house is the closest parallel: service, health routines, work and competition.
- Virgo lagna: Venus, lord of the 2nd and 9th, sits in the lagna. The lagna lord Mercury's strength decides a great deal.
- Capricorn lagna: the yogakaraka falls in the 9th, a trikona, but debilitated; its gifts often come through study, teachers or dharma after effort. See Venus in the 9th house.
- Aquarius lagna: the yogakaraka is in the 8th, a private, transformative house.
- Pisces lagna: Venus, lord of the 3rd and 8th, is in the 7th, aspecting its exaltation sign in the lagna.
- Libra lagna: the lagna lord falls in the 12th.
Aspects, conjunctions and the running dasha adjust each case.
Venus in transit through Virgo
Venus usually spends about 25 days in Virgo; with a retrograde, the site's 50 sampled passes stretched up to about 72 days. The dates are listed above, and the Venus transit page shows the live position. In gochar a debilitated transit is read calmly: for a few weeks, pleasures in the house it crosses from your Moon may ask for more care and effort.
Misreadings
- "Neecha Venus means no love." No. It changes the style of love, not its presence.
- Ignoring cancellation. Always check the lords and the navamsa.
- Reading the Western sign. A tropical Virgo Venus is often sidereal Leo, which is not a debilitation at all. For the opposite pole, compare Venus in Pisces, its exaltation.
