Neech bhang raj yog (neecha bhanga raja yoga) is the name for a debilitated planet whose weakness is cancelled by something else in the chart. In the most widely used rule, the cancellation comes when the lord of the sign the planet sits in, or the lord of the sign where it would be exalted, is in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the lagna or from the Moon.
Neecha means low, bhanga means broken: the "lowness" is broken. This guide sets out the debilitation signs, the exact rule our engine checks, the other conditions the texts cite, how often the yoga appears, and why the honest reading is more modest than the name.
First, what debilitation means
Each of the seven grahas has one sign where it is exalted (uchcha), at its best, and the opposite sign where it is debilitated (neecha), at its weakest. These are fixed in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and every later text.

A debilitated planet is traditionally said to struggle to give its natural results: Jupiter in Capricorn, for example, is read as wisdom that has to fight practical pressures. Rahu and Ketu are left out here; traditions disagree about their exaltation signs, and our engine checks only the seven grahas.
The rule our engine uses
Our free kundli lists neecha bhanga raja yoga under the Yogas tab when this condition holds, word for word:
A debilitated graha whose sign lord, or the lord of its exaltation sign, is in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon.
In practice, for each debilitated planet the engine looks at two helpers:
- The dispositor, the lord of the sign the planet is in (for Jupiter in Capricorn, that is Saturn).
- The lord of its exaltation sign (for Jupiter, exalted in Cancer, that is the Moon).
If either helper is in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house counted from the lagna, or failing that from the Moon, the yoga is listed, and the line tells you which helper did it and from which point. A planet counts as debilitated if it is in its debilitation sign; houses are whole signs, with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
A made-up illustration
Imagine an Aries lagna with Jupiter in Capricorn, the 10th house. Jupiter is debilitated. Its dispositor is Saturn. If Saturn sits in Cancer, the 4th house, Saturn is in a kendra from the lagna, and the rule is met: the kundli would show "Jupiter is debilitated; Saturn (lord of its debilitation sign) is in a kendra from the lagna". This chart is invented for illustration.
Two special cases: the Moon and Mercury
- When the helper is the Moon, we count it only from the lagna. For a debilitated Mars in Cancer, the dispositor is the Moon (it rules Cancer). For a debilitated Jupiter in Capricorn, the lord of its exaltation sign is the Moon (Jupiter is exalted in Cancer). The Moon is always in the 1st house from itself, so "in a kendra from the Moon" would say nothing about it. In these cases the Moon counts as a helper only if it is in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from the lagna. The other helper (Saturn, in both cases) is still checked from the lagna and from the Moon as usual.
- Mercury is its own helper. Mercury is exalted in Virgo, which Mercury rules. So for Mercury in Pisces, the "lord of its exaltation sign" is Mercury itself, and that part of the check becomes whether Mercury is in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon. Its dispositor, Jupiter, is checked as usual.
Other cancellation conditions the texts cite
Classical and later texts give a longer list. Phaladeepika, Saravali and Jataka Parijata, among others, mention conditions like these. We do not compute them; they are here so you can check them yourself:
- The planet that is exalted in that sign is in a kendra. For Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn, that is Mars, which is exalted in Capricorn.
- The debilitated planet is aspected by its dispositor.
- The debilitated planet is exalted in the navamsa (the D9 chart).
- Exchange with the dispositor, where each planet sits in the other's sign.
- Some authors add that the debilitated planet itself in a kendra, or joined with an exalted planet, softens the debilitation.

Different books weight these differently, and several have their own variants. That is one reason two astrologers can disagree about the same planet.
Cancelled, or a raja yoga?
This is the honest part. Everyone agrees that neecha bhanga means the debilitation is cancelled or softened. Whether that also creates a raja yoga, a combination for rise and status, is debated.
- One reading: the planet begins weak and becomes strong, so its results come after struggle, often later in life or in its own dasha, and can be striking because of the contrast.
- Another reading: the cancellation simply removes a minus. The planet is no longer badly placed, but nothing extra is added.
- Most careful astrologers sit between the two and look at the rest of the chart: the planet's house, its lordships, the strength of the lagna and the Moon.

How common is it?
More common than its reputation suggests. Each planet spends roughly one-twelfth of its time in its debilitation sign, and there are seven planets, so a good share of charts have at least one debilitated planet. (The share is not exact, because Mercury and Venus travel close to the Sun.)
Once a planet is debilitated, the cancellation has many ways to happen: two helper planets, each checked from two reference points. Any one planet is in a kendra from a given point in 4 of 12 houses, about a third of the time, and there are several such chances. On this rough reckoning, the common rule is met more often than not. So finding neecha bhanga in your chart is ordinary, not a sign of a special destiny.
Why fear and greed selling is wrong
Two sales lines surround this yoga. "Your Jupiter is debilitated, buy a gemstone or puja to fix it" plays on fear. "You have a hidden neech bhang raj yog, pay to unlock it" plays on hope. Both are wrong for the same reason: the positions of the planets at birth are fixed facts, and the tradition itself already provides the cancellation. Nothing is locked, and nothing needs buying. We do not sell remedies of any kind.
If you want to work with a debilitated planet, the free approach is to understand what it signifies and give that area of life patient attention. If a prayer or charity brings you peace, that is a personal choice, never a requirement.
