Raj yoga in a kundli, in the classical sense, is a connection between the lord of a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) and the lord of a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house). The two lords can connect by sitting in the same sign, by aspecting each other, or by exchanging signs; that is the rule given in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS).
It is also one of the most oversold phrases in astrology. Some kendra–trikona link shows up in a large share of charts, so being told "you have raj yoga" says very little by itself. This guide gives the exact rule, the planets that make it easiest (yogakarakas), what our free kundli does and does not list, and how to check your own chart by hand in a few minutes.
The rule, precisely
The houses fall into groups in Parashari astrology. The kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the pillars of the chart: self, home, partnership, work. The trikonas (1, 5, 9) are the houses of merit and fortune: self, intelligence and past merit, dharma and luck. The 1st house belongs to both groups.
BPHS says that when a lord of a kendra and a lord of a trikona are connected, they give power and position in their periods. The recognised connections are:
- Conjunction: both lords in the same sign.
- Mutual aspect: each lord aspects the sign of the other. Every graha aspects the 7th sign from itself; Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th.
- Exchange (parivartana): each lord sits in a sign owned by the other.
The pairing BPHS singles out for special praise is the lord of the 9th with the lord of the 10th, the house of fortune with the house of action, often called dharma–karmadhipati yoga.
Yogakaraka planets
For some lagnas a single graha owns both a kendra and a trikona. That graha is called a yogakaraka, and it is treated as a raj yoga in itself, especially in its own dasha.
| Lagna | Yogakaraka | Houses it rules |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus | Saturn | 9th and 10th |
| Libra | Saturn | 4th and 5th |
| Cancer | Mars | 5th and 10th |
| Leo | Mars | 4th and 9th |
| Capricorn | Venus | 5th and 10th |
| Aquarius | Venus | 4th and 9th |
The other six lagnas have no single yogakaraka; their raj yogas come only from two lords connecting. Your lagna is the first thing the lagna calculator or the kundli will tell you.
Why "raj yoga" alone promises no throne
Count the possibilities. Every chart has up to four kendra lords and three trikona lords, and three ways for any pair to connect. Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun, so the lords they share with the Sun often sit together. The result is that some kendra–trikona link exists in a large share of charts. If every one of them meant royalty, the world would be full of kings.
The texts themselves never read the label alone. Phaladeepika and Saravali, like BPHS, judge a raj yoga by:
- Dignity. Lords in their own or exaltation sign give much more than lords in debilitation or in enemy signs.
- The house where the link happens. A link in a kendra or trikona is strong; the same link in the 6th, 8th or 12th is weakened.
- Other lordships. A planet that rules a kendra or trikona and also the 6th, 8th or 12th carries mixed results.
- Combustion and aspects. A lord burnt by the Sun, or afflicted by malefics, delivers less.
- Timing. A raj yoga gives its results mainly in the dasha or antardasha of the planets that form it. If that period never runs in a lifetime, or runs in childhood, the yoga stays quiet. Our guide to Vimshottari dasha explains how to see which periods you will live through.
And "raj" today means rise and recognition in one's own field, not a literal throne. A teacher, a clerk or a farmer can have a strong raj yoga that shows up as respect, responsibility and steady growth.
What our kundli lists, and what it does not
Our free kundli has a Yogas tab. It lists only combinations that are actually present, each with its exact rule. It does not list the generic kendra–trikona raj yoga as a single item, because in that loose form it would appear in so many charts that the listing would mean little.
Instead it lists specific, named yogas, several of which are traditionally counted among the raja yogas:
- Neecha Bhanga Raja yoga: a debilitated graha whose sign lord, or the lord of its exaltation sign, is in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon. See neech bhang raj yoga.
- Vipreet Raja yogas: Harsha (6th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th), Sarala (8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th) and Vimala (12th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th). See vipreet raj yoga.
- Lakshmi yoga: the 9th lord in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra or trikona, and the lagna lord in a kendra or trikona and not debilitated.
- Pancha Mahapurusha yogas: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in its own or exaltation sign and in a kendra from the lagna.
- Gajakesari: Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon. Our guide to Gaj Kesari yoga covers it.
- Dhana yoga: a lord of the 2nd or 11th joined with a lord of the 5th or 9th.
How to check the generic raj yoga by hand
You need only the chart and the list of sign lords: Aries and Scorpio belong to Mars, Taurus and Libra to Venus, Gemini and Virgo to Mercury, Cancer to the Moon, Leo to the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces to Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius to Saturn. Our kundli uses whole-sign houses, so each house is exactly one sign.
- Find the sign on each house. The Charts tab shows the lagna sign in the 1st house; the next sign is the 2nd, and so on.
- Name the lord of houses 1, 4, 7, 10 and 1, 5, 9.
- Find where each lord sits. The Planets tab gives every graha's sign and house.
- Look for a link. Is a kendra lord in the same sign as a trikona lord? Does each aspect the other (the Aspects tab helps)? Are two of them in each other's signs?
- Then weigh it. Note the dignity of each lord, the house where they meet, and when their dashas run.
A worked illustration
This is a made-up chart, used only to show the method.
Suppose the lagna is Taurus. Then the houses run: 1 Taurus (Venus), 4 Leo (Sun), 5 Virgo (Mercury), 7 Scorpio (Mars), 9 Capricorn (Saturn), 10 Aquarius (Saturn).
- Saturn owns the 9th and the 10th. It is this lagna's yogakaraka, and the 9th–10th pairing is the one BPHS praises most.
- Suppose Saturn sits in Aquarius, the 10th house. It is in its own sign in a kendra, so the engine would also list Sasa yoga (one of the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas) for this chart.
- Suppose the Sun and Mercury are together in Leo, the 4th house. The Sun rules the 4th (a kendra) and Mercury the 5th (a trikona), so this is a kendra–trikona conjunction in a kendra. For a Taurus lagna, every Sun–Mercury conjunction is such a link, which shows how ordinary the generic yoga can be.
- Now weigh it: Saturn in its own sign is strong. The Sun in Leo is in its own sign too. Mercury might be combust if it is close to the Sun, which the Planets tab shows. And the yoga would speak mainly in the Saturn, Sun or Mercury dashas.
That is the whole method. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing.
A word on "unlock your raj yoga" selling
Pages and calls that say "you have a powerful raj yoga, pay to unlock it" or "a ritual will activate your raj yoga" are selling, not reading. A yoga is a fact about where the planets were at birth; nothing needs to be unlocked or activated, and no payment changes it. What a reading can honestly add is context: how strong the yoga is, what other factors pull against it, and when its periods run.
We do not sell rituals, gemstones or "activation" of any kind. If prayer or charity brings you peace, that is your own choice, never a requirement of the chart.
Try it yourself
Make a free kundli, open the Yogas tab to see which named yogas your chart has, and use the Charts and Planets tabs to check the kendra–trikona links by hand as shown above. If you want the whole chart weighed together, dignity, dashas and all, the detailed kundli report does that, or you can ask a specific question.
