Panch mahapurush yog (pancha mahapurusha yoga) is a set of five yogas, one each for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, formed when that planet is in its own sign or its exaltation sign and is also in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the lagna. The five are Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Sasa (Saturn).
Mahapurusha means "great person". The texts describe the person born with one of these as marked by the qualities of that planet. This guide gives the exact rule our engine checks, what each yoga is traditionally said to give, how often they appear, and what the texts say weakens them.
The rule, precisely
A mahapurusha yoga needs two things at once:
- Dignity: the planet is in one of its own signs or its exaltation sign.
- Angular position: that sign is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house counted from the lagna.
Our free kundli lists the yoga under the Yogas tab using exactly this rule, for example: "Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) from the lagna." The detail line says which house and whether it is the own sign or the exaltation sign. Houses are whole signs, with the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Mercury's own sign Virgo is also its exaltation sign, so Mercury has only two qualifying signs, while the other four have three each. Some texts describe Sasa with a sharper, calculating streak alongside its authority; the qualities in each row are what the tradition claims, not predictions.
What we do not count
- Kendras from the Moon. Some texts and many astrologers also count a planet in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the Moon. Our engine counts from the lagna only, which is the classical rule's main form.
- The Sun, Moon, Rahu and Ketu. The five mahapurusha yogas belong only to the five "star planets", Mars through Saturn. The Sun and Moon in dignity in a kendra are read as strong placements, but they do not form a mahapurusha yoga, and neither do the nodes.
A made-up illustration
Take a Gemini lagna. The 7th house is Sagittarius and the 10th is Pisces, both ruled by Jupiter. If Jupiter sits in either, it is in its own sign in a kendra: Hamsa yoga. The same Gemini lagna also puts Virgo in the 4th, so Mercury in Virgo would add Bhadra. This is an invented example for illustration.
How common are they?
More common than the grand name suggests. Take one planet, say Venus. It qualifies in 3 of the 12 signs (Taurus, Libra, Pisces). Whatever sign it is in, that sign is a kendra from the lagna for 4 of the 12 possible lagnas, a third. So, roughly, about one chart in twelve has Malavya (3/12 × 1/3). The same reckoning gives about one in twelve for Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, and a little less for Mercury, with only two qualifying signs.
Five yogas at about one in twelve each add up: a notable share of charts, something like one in three on this rough count, have at least one of the five. That is only an estimate. Planets do not spend equal time in each sign, and Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun, so the real share differs. But the conclusion stands: having a mahapurusha yoga is a good placement, not a rare mark of greatness.
What weakens them
The texts are clear that the yoga's promise depends on the planet's condition:
- Combustion. If the planet is too close to the Sun, it is combust (asta), and the texts say its results fall. This matters most for Mercury and Venus, which are often near the Sun. Our kundli's planet table marks combust planets.
- Affliction. A planet heavily joined with or aspected by malefics, or hemmed between them, is said to give much less.
- The rest of the chart. A strong lagna and lagna lord let the yoga express itself; a weak one limits it.
- Timing. Results are usually expected most clearly in the planet's own dasha and antardasha. Our Vimshottari dasha guide explains how to find them.

Reading the five together
A chart can hold more than one mahapurusha yoga. Two or three together are read as a blend: Hamsa with Malavya, for instance, is traditionally described as learning joined with refinement. Several at once do not multiply into a guarantee; they simply describe more than one strong planet, each with its own house, its own lordships and its own dasha. The house matters as much as the yoga. A planet in the 10th is most visible in work and public life, in the 7th in partnerships, in the 4th in home and inner security, and in the 1st in the person's own temperament and body.
Why fear and greed selling is wrong
Because the name promises greatness, these yogas are an easy hook: "you have Malavya yog, pay to activate it", or "your Hamsa yog is blocked, buy this gemstone". Neither makes sense. A yoga is a description of where a planet stood at birth. It is not switched off, and no ritual or purchase moves a planet. We do not sell remedies of any kind.
The honest use of the knowledge is modest and free: notice which planet is strong in your chart and lean on the qualities it describes, in the areas of life its house covers.
