This page uses the sidereal zodiac, in which Virgo (Kanya) is fixed to the stars through the Lahiri ayanamsa and sits about 24 degrees behind Western, tropical Virgo. In practice, a good share of people with a Western "Mars in Virgo" will see Mars in Leo in their kundli. Sidereal Virgo belongs to Mercury, a planet Mars does not like, and the placement is read as disciplined, detail-minded energy: courage that shows up as hard work, problem-solving and a sharp eye for what is wrong and how to fix it.
The warrior as craftsman
Virgo is an earth sign, dual (dvisvabhava), even and feminine, the 6th sign of the kalapurusha, associated with the waist and intestines. Its symbol is a maiden in a boat holding grain and fire: harvest, skill and careful use of resources. Mars here is less a charging soldier than a field engineer.
Typical tendencies:
- Method over bravado. Energy goes into planning, checking and improving.
- A critical eye. Faults are noticed quickly, in work and sometimes in people. Criticism can be useful or wounding, depending on delivery.
- Service and duty. Many with Mars in Virgo work hardest when solving someone else's problem.
- Skill with tools and systems. Mars is a karaka of surgery and machinery; Virgo adds precision, which is why later classical texts associate the pair with technical and medical skill.
- Nervous energy. When there is no clear task, worry and irritability can take over.
Dignity: Mercury's sign again
In Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's natural friendships, Mars regards Mercury as an enemy; Mercury treats Mars as neutral. Virgo is therefore an enemy's sign for Mars throughout its 30 degrees, just like Gemini, Mercury's other sign. The difference is the element: in airy Gemini Mars talks and argues, while in earthy Virgo it works and fixes.
Mercury's strength sets the tone. A well-placed Mercury gives this Mars competence and a good method; an afflicted Mercury can turn it into anxiety or nit-picking. There is no Mahapurusha yoga from Virgo. (Mercury is exalted in Virgo, but that concerns Mercury's dignity, not Mars's.)
Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and Chitra
- Uttara Phalguni, padas 2 to 4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): reliability, contracts and helping others. The Sun, a friend of Mars, gives this section more confidence.
- Hasta, all four padas (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): the hand. Dexterity, craft, healing and practical cleverness; Mars here is often skilled with the hands.

Mars in Virgo casts its 4th drishti on Sagittarius, its 7th on Pisces and its 8th on Aries. The 8th aspect returns to its own sign Aries; the other two fall on Jupiter's signs, both friendly to Mars.

Virgo is the natural 6th house, and Mars is traditionally strong in the 6th, so Mars in the 6th house is the obvious parallel: overcoming rivals, service, health routines and daily effort. For your chart:

- Enemy's sign is not a curse. It lowers comfort, not ability. A 6th or 10th house Mars in Virgo can be highly effective.
