Mars in the 10th house places the planet of courage, energy and command in the house of career, status and action in the world. It is one of Mars's strongest positions: here Mars gains full directional strength, and tradition reads the placement as ambition, decisiveness and a capacity to lead.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Mars digbala in the 10th and defines Ruchaka yoga as Mars in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the lagna; Phaladeepika also describes Ruchaka among the five Mahapurusha yogas. Traditional authors who list results by house tend to read Mars in the 10th favourably, with courage, success in undertakings and recognition. Even so, the classical method never judges a house from one planet: the 10th lord, aspects and the navamsa refine every promise.
Common misreadings
- Expecting fame from Mars alone. Digbala is one strength among several; the rest of the chart decides how far it goes.
- Ignoring the debilitated case. For Libra lagna Mars has both digbala and debility; neither cancels the other.
- Reading a Moon chart as the birth chart. From the Moon, Mars may sit in another house; the lagna chart comes first.
- Treating Mars as only a malefic. In an upachaya with digbala, Mars is working in its best setting.
