In sidereal astrology, which this site follows with the Lahiri ayanamsa, Capricorn (Makara) begins about 24 degrees later than the tropical Capricorn of Western horoscopes. A Western "Mars in Capricorn" is therefore frequently Mars in Sagittarius in the kundli, and some Western Aquarius placements land here instead. Sidereal Capricorn is where Mars is exalted, most of all at 28 degrees, and tradition reads it as energy at its most useful: disciplined, patient, organised and aimed at achievement that lasts.
Energy with a plan
Capricorn is an earth sign, movable (chara), even and feminine, the 10th sign of the kalapurusha and associated with the knees. Its symbol is the makara, a crocodile-like sea creature with a deer's head: at home in water and on land, patient and hard to dislodge. Mars brings the fire; Capricorn gives it a structure and a long road.
What tradition expects:
- Discipline. Effort is steady rather than explosive. This Mars trains, plans and keeps going.
- Ambition for position. Capricorn is the natural 10th, the house of career and status. Mars here wants results that others can see.
- Practical courage. Risk is taken when it is calculated. Command in organisations, engineering, administration and the armed services are classic associations.
- Endurance. Like the makara, this Mars does not tire easily.
- Coolness. Heat is controlled. The person may seem reserved while working very hard.
Dignity: exaltation
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Mars its exaltation (uchcha) in Capricorn with the deepest point at 28°, and its debilitation at the same degree of the opposite sign, Cancer. The whole of Capricorn counts as exaltation; strength is greatest near 28°.
One detail deserves a note: the sign lord Saturn regards Mars as an enemy, while Mars regards Saturn as neutral. So Mars is exalted in the house of a lord who does not favour it. Classical astrology treats exaltation as a dignity of its own, independent of the host's friendship, but many astrologers read Saturn's condition alongside: a strong Saturn gives the exalted Mars a solid framework, a weak one leaves it working without support.
Ruchaka yoga
An exalted Mars in a kendra forms Ruchaka yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas (see Panch Mahapurush yoga). For Mars in Capricorn:
- Aries lagna: Capricorn is the 10th house; the lagna lord is exalted there and has digbala. This is the textbook strong Mars. See Mars in the 10th house.
- Cancer lagna: Capricorn is the 7th; the yogakaraka, lord of the 5th and 10th, is exalted in a kendra. See Mars in the 7th house.
- Libra lagna: Capricorn is the 4th; Mars rules the 2nd and 7th.
- Capricorn lagna: Mars is exalted on the ascendant, ruling the 4th and 11th. See Mars in the 1st house.
Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta
- Uttara Ashadha, padas 2 to 4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): lasting victory; with the Sun, a friend of Mars, as lord, drive becomes principled and steady.
- Shravana, all four padas (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): listening and learning. Mars works through knowledge, instruction and careful attention.
- Dhanishta, padas 1 and 2 (23°20′–30°, lord Mars): wealth and rhythm. Mars's own nakshatra, and the deepest exaltation point of 28° falls here, so this is the most concentrated Mars in the zodiac.
Aspects from Capricorn
From Capricorn, Mars aspects Aries with its 4th drishti, Cancer with its 7th and Leo with its 8th. It looks at its own sign Aries and at its sign of debilitation opposite; the Cancer house in your chart receives a strong, direct Mars aspect.
Other lagnas
Capricorn is the natural 10th house. For lagnas where it is not a kendra, the exalted Mars still matters:
- Leo lagna: the yogakaraka, lord of the 4th and 9th, is exalted in the 6th, strong for overcoming obstacles and rivals.
- Virgo lagna: Capricorn is the 5th, a trikona; Mars rules the 3rd and 8th.
- Scorpio lagna: the lagna lord is exalted in the 3rd house of courage.
- Pisces lagna: Mars, lord of the 2nd and 9th, is exalted in the 11th house of gains.
As always, the navamsa, aspects, conjunctions and dasha modify the result.
Manglik and exaltation
Exaltation does not change which house Mars is in, and the Manglik rule is about houses from the lagna, and often from the Moon and Venus. Mars in Capricorn falls in a listed house for Capricorn lagna (1st), Sagittarius lagna (2nd), Libra lagna (4th), Cancer lagna (7th), Gemini lagna (8th) and Aquarius lagna (12th). Many traditions treat an exalted Mars as a cancellation. The Manglik dosha guide covers the rules calmly.
Mars transiting Capricorn
Mars usually spends about 39 days in Capricorn, among its shortest stays in any sign. A retrograde loop here can extend the stay to about six months. The dates are listed above and on the Mars transit page. In gochar, an exalted transit is read as productive effort in the house Capricorn occupies from your Moon, especially in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Moon.
Misreadings
- "Exalted means only good." It means strong and dignified. Lordship and house decide what that strength serves.
- Using the Western sign. See Vedic vs Western sun signs.
- Ignoring the degree. Mars at 2° of Capricorn and Mars at 28° are both exalted, but tradition reads the latter as stronger.
