Makara, the sidereal Capricorn, is fixed by the Lahiri ayanamsa at roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical Capricorn that Western charts use. So Ketu shown in Aquarius on a Western chart is often in sidereal Capricorn, and a Western Capricorn Ketu may really be in Sagittarius. In Makara the node of detachment sits in Saturn's sign of duty, work and public standing, and is usually read as someone very capable at what they do who cares surprisingly little for the rank it brings.
The sea creature with a deer's head
Capricorn is earth, movable (chara), even and feminine, the natural 10th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the knees and the south. Its symbol, the makara, is a crocodile-like sea creature with a deer's head, at home both in water and on land. It governs career, responsibility, institutions, structure and slow achievement. Ketu brings instinct, detachment and skill that seems inherited. Traditional readings of the blend include:
- Work done well for its own sake. Diligence without careerism.
- Unusual career paths. Sudden changes of field, or a career that does not match the family's expectations.
- A distance from hierarchies. The person respects competence more than rank and may quietly step outside institutions.
- Practical, systems-level skill. Administration, engineering, law, logistics or any craft that needs patience.
- Knees and joints as the sign's traditional body area, noted gently and nothing more.
Dignity and the lord Saturn
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Ketu no own sign, and the later argument about its exaltation is between Scorpio and Sagittarius, with some texts making Ketu co-ruler of Scorpio. Capricorn is not part of it, so the site lists Ketu's dignity here as not fixed.
The sign lord, Saturn, then leads the reading. Ketu is said to act like Mars while Rahu acts like Saturn, so in Saturn's sign Ketu is working in a slower, more disciplined house than its own temperament. A strong Saturn channels that into endurance and mastery of a craft. A weak or strained Saturn can let detachment turn into disengagement from duties. Conjunctions change a great deal here as well: Mars, which is exalted in Capricorn, beside Ketu makes a sharp, driven pair, very unlike Jupiter, which is debilitated here.
Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Dhanishta
- Uttara Ashadha (padas 2 to 4, 0° to 10°, lord Sun): the final, lasting victory. A principled Ketu that finishes what it takes on.
- Shravana (10° to 23°20′, lord Moon): the star of listening. Ketu here often learns by hearing, teaches through speech, and is drawn to sacred sound or study.
- Dhanishta (padas 1 and 2, 23°20′ to 30°, lord Mars): the drum, rhythm and wealth. Mars as star lord brings out Ketu's Mars side; music, timing and bold action.
Lagna by lagna
- Capricorn lagna: the 1st house, with Saturn as lagna lord.
- Aries lagna: the 10th house, Capricorn's natural place; see Ketu in the 10th house for career and public life.
- Taurus lagna: the 9th house, where Saturn is the yogakaraka.
- Libra lagna: the 4th house, with Saturn again the yogakaraka; a kendra placement in its sign.
- Virgo lagna: the 5th house of children and study.
- Cancer lagna: the 7th house, with Rahu rising in Cancer.
Rahu in Cancer
Ketu in Capricorn places Rahu in Cancer. Ketu has little appetite for status; Rahu hungers for home, emotional security, belonging and sometimes land or property. People with this axis may do well at work without caring much, while pouring their ambition into family, home or a sense of roots. Ketu's 7th aspect, where it is used, falls on Cancer; the 5th and 9th node aspects are disputed.
Ketu's transit through Capricorn
Ketu reaches Capricorn from Aquarius, moving backwards, and passes on to Sagittarius after usually about 1 year 6 months; the dates are listed above. The passage is traditionally read as a time when career goals and institutional loyalties are questioned, and some people change roles or step back from ambition. By the classical gochar rule for the nodes, Scorpio, Leo and Pisces Moon signs, for whom Capricorn is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, usually find it easier. The live position is on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
In the seven-year Ketu mahadasha, Capricorn Ketu often reshapes working life: a change of field, less concern with promotion, more interest in work that feels meaningful.
Misreadings to avoid
- Predicting career failure. Detachment from status is not the absence of achievement.
- Reading the Western sign. Confirm the sidereal position first.
- Ignoring Saturn, conjunctions, navamsa and dasha, which decide the result.
