Mercury in Capricorn refers, in Vedic astrology, to Mercury in sidereal Makara, which the Lahiri ayanamsa places some 24 degrees behind Western tropical Capricorn. So a Western "Mercury in Capricorn" is very often Mercury in Sagittarius in the kundli, and a Western Aquarius Mercury may belong here. In sidereal Capricorn, Mercury puts on working clothes: tradition reads a serious, methodical, practical mind, good with structures, rules, money and long-term plans, and more interested in what works than in what sounds clever.
Intelligence at work
Capricorn is an earth sign, movable (chara), even and feminine, ruled by Saturn. Its symbol is the makara, a crocodile-like sea creature with a deer's head; its direction south; in the kalapurusha body it is the knees. As the natural 10th sign it covers career, authority, duty and public reputation.
Mercury is intellect, speech and trade. In a movable earth sign it tends to be:
- Methodical. Step by step, checklist by checklist. Plans are made to be carried out.
- Business-minded. Accounts, budgets, supply chains, administration and management. Capricorn Mercury respects numbers.
- Economical in speech. Words are few and to the point; the humour, when it comes, is dry.
