Your kundli places Rahu in sidereal Capricorn (Makara), which the Lahiri ayanamsa sets about 24 degrees behind the tropical Capricorn of Western astrology, so a Western "Rahu in Capricorn" is often Rahu in Sagittarius in Vedic reckoning. In sidereal Capricorn, Rahu works through Saturn's earth sign of effort, structure and public duty: the placement is usually read as a patient, strategic, career-driven Rahu, hungry for position and willing to climb for it.
What Rahu wants in Makara
Rahu is the karaka of ambition, the unfamiliar and the large-scale. Capricorn is earth, movable (chara), even and feminine, the 10th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the knees, the south and the makara, a sea creature with a deer's head. It is the sign of work, hierarchy, government and results earned over time.
Traits tradition connects with this Rahu:
- Climbing. Steady, long-range ambition in institutions, industry or public service.
- Systems and scale. Infrastructure, engineering, technology platforms, logistics and big organisations.
- Pragmatism. A cool head about money, rules and power; comfortable with responsibility.
- Outsider rise. Many readings describe someone who reaches authority from an unusual or humble starting point.
- Shadow side. Over-work, coldness, or measuring worth only by status.
Dignity and the Saturn connection
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Rahu no sign of its own, and Capricorn plays no part in the texts' dispute over Rahu's exaltation (Taurus or Gemini) and debilitation (Scorpio or Sagittarius). So there is no fixed dignity.
Two things make Capricorn congenial all the same. First, the same classical text says Rahu acts like Saturn. Second, Saturn is commonly counted among Rahu's friends, with Mercury and Venus, although no friendship table for the nodes is universally accepted. The practical reading:
- A strong Saturn (in its own signs, exalted in Libra, or well placed) gives Rahu a disciplined dispositor; the hunger turns into lasting work.
- A weak or afflicted Saturn can make the ambition heavy, anxious or impatient with delay.
- The houses Saturn rules for your lagna are the matters Rahu carries in this sign. For Taurus and Libra lagnas, where Saturn is yogakaraka, that is especially significant.
Some modern authors also give Rahu a co-rulership of Aquarius, Saturn's other sign; see Rahu in Aquarius. That view does not extend to Capricorn.
Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Dhanishta
- Uttara Ashadha, padas 2 to 4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): principle and final victory. The Sun, commonly Rahu's adversary, adds a pull towards official recognition.
- Shravana (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): listening and learning. Rahu here is read as skilled in media, teaching, communication and gathering knowledge from many sources.
- Dhanishta, padas 1 and 2 (23°20′–30°, lord Mars): wealth and rhythm. Energy, music, property and ambitious projects.
House by lagna
Capricorn is the natural 10th sign, and Rahu in the 10th house is its textbook form: career, reputation and public action. The 10th is an upachaya and a kendra, where a node's drive is highly visible. With other lagnas:
- Scorpio lagna: the 3rd house, another upachaya; courage, media and enterprise.
- Pisces lagna: the 11th, gains through networks and large organisations. See Rahu in the 11th house.
- Virgo lagna: the 5th, unusual intellect, speculation or creative projects.
- Cancer lagna: the 7th, partners from different backgrounds or ambitious alliances.
- Taurus lagna: the 9th, with yogakaraka Saturn as dispositor.
Ketu in Cancer
Ketu always sits opposite, here in Cancer, the Moon's sign of home and feeling. The axis runs from the office to the kitchen table. Many astrologers read it as a person already at ease with nurture and family who now hungers for public achievement, and who does best by not abandoning the private side. Rahu's 7th aspect falls on Cancer; the 5th and 9th aspects some traditions give the nodes would fall on Taurus and Virgo, but many astrologers do not use them.
The transit through Capricorn
Rahu usually stays in Capricorn for about 18 months. Moving backwards, it enters from Aquarius at the Dhanishta end, crosses Shravana and leaves through Uttara Ashadha into Sagittarius. The dates are listed above, and the Rahu transit page shows the live degree.
In gochar, read from your Moon sign, the passage is traditionally linked with ambition, restructuring and responsibility in the matching house. For some Moon signs Capricorn is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, where a Rahu transit is counted as favourable. The dasha running at the time, including a Rahu mahadasha, decides how much of this is felt.
Misreadings
- Assuming it is a special dignity. Capricorn is friendly ground by common opinion; it is not an exaltation or own sign in the classical texts.
- Reading ambition as a fixed destiny. The house, Saturn and the navamsa change it.
- Worrying about Kaal Sarp. It is a separate pattern; see our calm explainer.
