Sidereal Sagittarius, or Dhanu, is the sign Vedic astrology uses; the Lahiri ayanamsa places it about 24 degrees behind tropical Sagittarius, so the Western "Rahu in Sagittarius" often corresponds to Rahu in Scorpio in the kundli. In sidereal Sagittarius, Rahu enters Jupiter's fire sign of dharma, teachers and long journeys: it is read as a hunger for meaning and belief, bold and far-reaching, and some schools call this the node's debilitation.
Rahu and the archer
Rahu magnifies desire and pulls towards the foreign and unconventional. Sagittarius is fire, dual (dvisvabhava), odd and masculine, the 9th sign of the kalapurusha, associated with the thighs, the east, and an archer who is half man and half horse. It is the sign of faith, law, higher study, pilgrimage and the guru.
Tradition connects the blend with:
- A hunger for big ideas. Philosophy, religion, law, publishing and education.
- Far horizons. Study or life abroad, long journeys, foreign teachers or mixed traditions.
- Unconventional faith. Breaking with the family's beliefs, or finding a path the family would not recognise.
- Persuasion. Preaching, teaching, advocacy and public speaking.
- Shadow side. Over-confidence, moralising, or jumping from one belief system to the next.
Is Sagittarius a debility for Rahu?
Here the dispute works in reverse to Scorpio:
- Some texts put Rahu's exaltation in Gemini, which makes Sagittarius its debilitation.
- Many others use Taurus and Scorpio; under that view Sagittarius has no special dignity for Rahu. See Rahu in Scorpio.
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Rahu no sign.
The same texts disagree over Ketu too: some give Ketu's exaltation in Sagittarius rather than Scorpio. A reading that calls this Rahu "debilitated" should name its source and then look past the label.
The rules of neecha-bhanga, or cancellation of debility, were built for the seven visible planets; some astrologers extend them to the nodes and others do not. Where they are used, the key factor here is Jupiter, the sign lord: a strong Jupiter in a kendra is widely read as lifting any weakness.
Jupiter as dispositor
Jupiter owns Sagittarius, and no agreed friendship table covers the nodes; many astrologers treat Jupiter and Rahu as uneasy together, since Rahu's appetite runs against Jupiter's restraint. In practice:
- A strong, dignified Jupiter gives Rahu a wise guide; the hunger becomes serious study, teaching or ethical ambition.
- A weak Jupiter can leave Rahu chasing beliefs or gurus without discrimination.
- Jupiter joined with Rahu anywhere is a combination many texts name and discuss; its tone depends heavily on the sign, house and aspects involved.
Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha
- Mula (0°–13°20′, lord Ketu): the root. Rahu in Ketu's nakshatra searches for foundations, often by tearing up old ones. The first degrees are a gandanta zone where water meets fire.
- Purva Ashadha (13°20′–26°40′, lord Venus): the invincible. Confidence, persuasion and a pull towards pleasure and victory.
- Uttara Ashadha, pada 1 (26°40′–30°, lord Sun): lasting victory and principle, with the Sun's presence adding a note of authority.
Which house it falls in
Sagittarius is the natural 9th sign, so Rahu in the 9th house gives the core themes: father, dharma, teachers, fortune and long journeys. For other lagnas:
- Libra lagna: the 3rd, an upachaya where Rahu turns belief into writing, media and bold effort. See Rahu in the 3rd house.
- Aquarius lagna: the 11th, gains through institutions and networks.
- Gemini lagna: the 7th, partners from different faiths or countries.
- Virgo lagna: the 4th, home and education with a foreign flavour.
The Gemini axis
Ketu always occupies the opposite sign, here Gemini. The axis runs from information to wisdom, from the many small facts to the one big truth. Many astrologers read it as someone with an old knack for detail and communication who now hungers for meaning. Rahu's 7th aspect falls on Gemini; if you use the 5th and 9th aspects some traditions allow, they reach Aries and Leo, though others do not accept them.
Rahu's transit through Dhanu
Rahu stays about 18 months in Sagittarius. It enters from Capricorn at the Uttara Ashadha end, moves back through Purva Ashadha and leaves through Mula into Scorpio. The dates are listed above, and the Rahu transit page tracks the live position.
In gochar, read from the Moon sign, the passage is traditionally linked with shifting beliefs, study, travel and questions about teachers in the matching house. The natal chart and the running dasha, especially a Rahu mahadasha, shape the result.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Stating the debility as fact. It belongs to one convention.
- Ignoring Jupiter. Most of the reading runs through the dispositor.
- Fear-based reading. A node here often gives adventurous learning. For Kaal Sarp questions, see our calm explainer.
