In sidereal astrology, with the Lahiri ayanamsa placing each sign about 24 degrees behind its tropical namesake, Dhanu covers a different arc from the Western Sagittarius. A Western "Ketu in Capricorn" therefore often sits in sidereal Sagittarius, and a Western Sagittarius Ketu tends to be in Scorpio. Ketu in Dhanu places the node of moksha in Jupiter's sign of dharma, teachers and higher knowledge, and is usually read as a searching, philosophical nature that trusts experience more than doctrine.
The archer without a target
Sagittarius is fire, dual (dvisvabhava), odd and masculine, the natural 9th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the thighs and the east. Its symbol is an archer who is half man and half horse, aiming beyond the horizon. It rules faith, teachers, the father, pilgrimage, law and fortune. Ketu, the body without a head, knows by instinct and does not grasp. Traditional readings describe:
- Faith that is lived, not borrowed. A distrust of dogma and a preference for direct experience.
- Learning that seems remembered. Scripture, philosophy, law or languages come easily, as if studied before.
- An independent line with teachers and the father. Respect without blind following, sometimes distance.
- Restless travel, especially to places of pilgrimage, study or retreat.
- Thighs and hips as the sign's body area, a gentle traditional association only.
The exaltation argument, from the other side
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Ketu no sign. Among later authorities, one group puts Ketu's exaltation in Sagittarius, with its debilitation in Gemini. Another, larger group uses Scorpio, with the debility in Taurus. Some also call Ketu co-ruler of Scorpio. The site lists the dignity as not fixed, and any reading built on one of these views should say which one it follows.
Both camps agree on one thing: the dispositor matters. Here that is Jupiter, the great benefic and teacher. A strong Jupiter makes this one of the more naturally spiritual Ketu placements: wise, generous, unattached to religious status. A weakened Jupiter can leave the same search unsettled, moving from belief to belief without landing. Conjunctions matter too; Jupiter itself beside Ketu here is often read as the guru-Ketu combination, a teacher's or seeker's signature.
Mula, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Ashadha
- Mula (0° to 13°20′, all padas, lord Ketu): the root. Ketu in its own star, pulling things up to see what they grow from. The opening degree of Sagittarius is a gandanta point, the join of water and fire. Tradition calls it sensitive, but it is a common birth placement and one factor among many.
- Purva Ashadha (13°20′ to 26°40′, lord Venus): the invincible, purifying waters. Ketu here often argues well for what it believes, then lets the argument go.
- Uttara Ashadha (pada 1, 26°40′ to 30°, lord Sun): the final victory. A principled, steady Ketu.
By lagna
- Sagittarius lagna: the 1st house, with Jupiter as lagna lord.
- Aries lagna: the 9th house, Sagittarius's natural place; read Ketu in the 9th house for teachers, faith and fortune.
- Leo lagna: the 5th house of mantra, study and children, a trikona.
- Virgo lagna: the 4th house of home and inner peace.
- Gemini lagna: the 7th house, with Rahu rising in Gemini.
- Pisces lagna: the 10th house, with Jupiter as lagna lord and 10th lord; work may take a teaching or advisory turn.
Rahu in Gemini
Ketu in Sagittarius always puts Rahu in Gemini. Ketu has had enough of big theories; Rahu is hungry for information, skills, media, trade and quick exchange. People with this axis often end up communicating ideas practically, as writers, teachers or technicians, while privately trusting only what they have experienced. Ketu's 7th aspect, where it is counted, also falls on Gemini; the nodes' 5th and 9th aspects are disputed.
Ketu's transit through Sagittarius
Ketu arrives in Sagittarius from Capricorn, since it moves backwards, and leaves for Scorpio, usually after about 1 year 6 months; the dates are listed above. The passage is traditionally read as a time when beliefs, teachers and long-held principles are reconsidered, and some people step away from institutions. Libra, Cancer and Aquarius Moon signs, for whom Sagittarius is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, usually find it easier by the classical rule. Follow it on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
The seven-year Ketu mahadasha often brings a turn towards study, pilgrimage or inner practice, or a break with a belief system that no longer fits.
Common misreadings
- Calling it settled exaltation. It is one school's view.
- Assuming loss of faith. Detachment from dogma often deepens real faith.
- Leaving out Jupiter, the house, the navamsa and the dasha.
