Ketu in Karka, the sidereal Cancer of Vedic astrology, is counted from the Lahiri ayanamsa and so begins roughly 24 degrees earlier in the sky than tropical Cancer. If a Western chart shows Ketu in Leo, it is often in sidereal Cancer, and a Western Cancer Ketu has often slipped back into Gemini. In the Moon's sign the south node touches the most personal areas of life, mind, mother, home and feeling, and is usually read as a deep, private emotional life that does not rely on others for comfort.
The node of letting go in the sign of belonging
Cancer is water, movable (chara), even and feminine, the natural 4th sign of the kalapurusha, ruling the heart and chest. Its symbol, the crab, carries its home on its back. Ketu wants nothing it does not already have. In a sign so tied to belonging, the usual traditional picture is:
- Feelings held inside. The person feels a great deal but shows little, and may seem cooler than they are.
- An unusual relationship with home. Frequent moves, living away from the birthplace, or simply not needing a fixed base.
- Strong intuition. Cancer's receptivity and Ketu's instinct combine into reading people and moods quickly.
- Distance or difference from the mother, which can mean independence as easily as separation.
- Chest and heart as the sign's body parts, a gentle traditional association and nothing more.
The Moon as dispositor
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Ketu no sign of its own, and the dispute over its exaltation runs between Scorpio and Sagittarius, with some texts making it co-ruler of Scorpio. Cancer has no part in that debate, so the dignity here is not fixed.
That makes the sign lord, the Moon, decisive. The nodes are the eclipse points of the Moon's path, so Ketu in the Moon's own sign has an obvious resonance. When the Moon is strong, bright and well supported, Ketu here often gives calm, meditative depth and a gift for caring for others without clinging. When the Moon is weak or afflicted, the same Ketu can make emotional security harder to find. Where the natal Moon sits with Ketu, the eclipse theme becomes direct and is read carefully, along with the Moon's phase and aspects.
Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha
- Punarvasu (pada 4, 0° to 3°20′, lord Jupiter): a short, hopeful opening, a sense of coming home after wandering.
- Pushya (3°20′ to 16°40′, lord Saturn): the nourishing star. Ketu here often serves, teaches or cares in a disciplined, low-key way.
- Ashlesha (16°40′ to 30°, lord Mercury): the coiled serpent. A penetrating, sometimes secretive intelligence. The final degree of Cancer is a gandanta junction, where water ends and fire (Magha, Ketu's own star) begins.
Which house for your lagna
- Cancer lagna: the 1st house, with the Moon as lagna lord; the self and the mind share one ruler.
- Aries lagna: the 4th house, Cancer's natural place. See Ketu in the 4th house for home, mother and inner peace.
- Pisces lagna: the 5th house of children and study.
- Capricorn lagna: the 7th house, with Rahu rising in the 1st.
- Scorpio lagna: the 9th house of fortune and teachers, where the Moon is 9th lord.
- Libra lagna: the 10th house; the Moon rules the 10th, so the career may follow intuition more than plan.
Rahu in Capricorn
Ketu in Cancer always pairs with Rahu in Capricorn. Ketu withdraws from home comfort and emotional dependency; Rahu pushes towards status, structure, public duty and work. People with this axis are often driven in their careers while feeling curiously unattached to domestic life. Ketu's 7th aspect, where it is used, falls on Capricorn; the node's 5th and 9th aspects remain disputed.
Ketu's transit through Cancer
Moving backwards, Ketu comes into Cancer from Leo and goes on to Gemini, staying usually about 1 year 6 months; the dates, including whether this passage is under way now, are listed above. Traditionally it is a period when home arrangements, family roles and emotional habits are reconsidered, sometimes through a move. By the classical gochar rule for the nodes, Taurus, Aquarius and Virgo Moon signs, for whom Cancer is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, usually find it easier. For Cancer Moons the node crosses the janma rashi itself, which is read as reflective rather than alarming. Follow it on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
The seven-year Ketu mahadasha tends to bring Cancer themes forward: a changed home, less emotional dependence, interest in meditation or quiet service. How gently it runs follows the Moon.
Where readings go wrong
- Treating Western and sidereal signs as the same.
- Assuming a cold person. Ketu here hides feeling; it does not remove it.
- Ignoring the Moon. The sign lord, conjunctions, the navamsa and the running dasha change everything.
