In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun stays in Karka from about 16–17 July to 16–17 August; the Western "Sun in Cancer" (tropical) runs from 20–22 June to 22–23 July. Put simply, a good share of Western Leos are sidereal Cancer Suns, and most Western Cancers have the Sun in sidereal Gemini. The Sun in Cancer places the king of the planets in the house of the queen, the Moon: a friendly sign where authority takes the form of protection, loyalty and care for one's own.
The Sun in the sign of the heart
Cancer is a water sign, movable (chara), even and feminine, with the crab as its symbol. It is the 4th sign of the kalapurusha, linked to the heart and chest, the mother, home, land and inner peace. The Sun is hot, dry and outward; Cancer is cool, receptive and inward. The pairing works because the two lords are friends, but the Sun's light is turned toward the private side of life.
What it tends to show:
- Leadership as caretaking. The person shields those in their charge, sometimes fiercely, and expects loyalty in return.
- Identity rooted in belonging. Family, community, homeland or tradition become part of how the self is defined.
- Sensitivity under a firm shell. Pride can be easily hurt, which the crab's armour hides.
- Memory and continuity. A strong feel for history, heritage and keeping things going.
Tradition associates Cancer with the heart and chest; this is a symbolic mapping, not a medical claim.
Dignity: a friend's house
Across all 30° of Cancer the Sun is in a friend's sign. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists the Moon among the Sun's natural friends, and the Moon returns the friendship, so the relationship is mutual and warm. This is the first of four friend's signs for the Sun (Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces).
The Moon's condition therefore colours everything. A bright, well-placed Moon gives the Sun a supportive host; a waning or afflicted Moon makes the placement more emotionally changeable. Cancer and Leo sit side by side, the Moon's sign and the Sun's, and classical writers treat the two luminaries as the royal pair of the planetary court. With the Sun in Cancer, the king has stepped into the queen's rooms.
Nakshatras within Cancer
- Punarvasu, pada 4 (0°–3°20′, lord Jupiter): a brief, hopeful opening. Jupiter is a friend of the Sun, and the tone is generous and restorative.
- Pushya (3°20′–16°40′, lord Saturn): long regarded as one of the most nourishing nakshatras. Saturn is the Sun's enemy, so the Sun here often learns discipline, duty and service to a larger whole; responsibility comes early.
- Ashlesha (16°40′–30°, lord Mercury): the coiled serpent. Perceptive, strategic and private; Mercury lends a sharp, sometimes guarded intelligence.
By house, lagna by lagna
- Cancer lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun ruling the 2nd. Speech, family resources and values attach to the person's presence.
- Aries lagna: the 4th house, Cancer's natural house, with the 5th lord at home. The Sun is weakest in digbala in the 4th, so authority is used more at home than in public. See Sun in the 4th house.
- Libra lagna: the 10th house, where the Sun has full directional strength and rules the 11th. See Sun in the 10th house.
- Scorpio lagna: the 9th house, with the 10th lord in the house of fortune, a classic link between career and dharma.
- Pisces lagna: the 5th house, with the 6th lord in a trikona.
- Leo lagna: the 12th house, the lagna lord in the house of retreat and distant places.
From Cancer the Sun's full aspect (drishti) reaches Capricorn, Saturn's sign.
The transit and Karka Sankranti
The Sun's gochar through Cancer takes about 31 days. Its entry, Karka Sankranti, is traditionally counted in Indian calendars as the start of Dakshinayana, the Sun's southward half of the year; in the sidereal reckoning it falls weeks after the astronomical solstice, which is itself a nice example of the zodiac difference. The month is traditionally read as a time for home, family and inward matters. For your own chart, count from the Moon sign: the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon are considered favourable for the Sun. See the current position on Sun transits.
Misreadings to avoid
- Confusing the two zodiacs. A Western Cancer is usually a Vedic Gemini Sun; see Vedic vs Western sun sign and the ayanamsa.
- Calling the Sun "emotional" and stopping there. Cancer softens the Sun's expression; it does not dim it.
- Ignoring the Moon. The host's strength is half the story.
- Reading a single placement as a verdict. The lagna, conjunctions, the navamsa and the dasha running at the time all change the outcome.
