In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun occupies Kanya from about 16–17 September to 17–18 October, while the Western "Sun in Virgo" (tropical) falls on 22–23 August to 22–23 September. Only a few days of September are shared, so a person who calls themselves Virgo in Western terms nearly always has a sidereal Leo Sun. The Sun in Virgo turns the planet of the self toward craft, analysis and service: authority is earned by getting things right.
The maiden, the grain and the lamp
Virgo is an earth sign, dual (dvisvabhava), even and feminine, ruled by Mercury. Its symbol is a maiden in a boat holding grain and fire: harvest, skill and care carried across water. As the 6th sign of the kalapurusha it relates to the waist and intestines, to daily work, service, competition, debts and the effort of setting things right. The Sun here does not seek the throne; it seeks to be indispensable.
Familiar expressions:
- Competence as identity. Self-worth rises and falls with how well one does one's work.
- An analytical eye. Details, systems and corrections come naturally; so does criticism, sometimes aimed inward.
- Service with dignity. Medicine, accounting, editing, administration, technical trades and any work that fixes problems suit this Sun.
- Resilience in contest. The 6th-sign themes of rivalry and obstacles are met by persistence rather than by display.
Tradition links Virgo with the digestive region; it is a symbolic mapping only.
Dignity and the Mercury connection
Across its 30° Virgo is a neutral sign for the Sun. As with Gemini, the relationship is uneven: the Sun sees Mercury as neutral, Mercury sees the Sun as a friend. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra also makes Virgo Mercury's exaltation sign and moolatrikona, so the host is at its most powerful in this sign.
That matters because Mercury is never far from the Sun. When Mercury is also in Virgo, exalted, the two form Budha-Aditya yoga with a very strong Mercury, a traditional mark of practical intelligence. If Mercury sits very close to the Sun it is combust (asta), and its brilliance may serve the person's ambitions more than it shines on its own. Checking Mercury's degree, house and dignity is the first job with a Virgo Sun.
How the three nakshatras shade it
- Uttara Phalguni, padas 2–4 (0°–10°, lord Sun): the Sun in its own nakshatra. Reliable, contract-minded and generous in a steady way; the most "solar" part of Virgo.
- Hasta (10°–23°20′, lord Moon): the hand. Skill, dexterity and resourcefulness; the Moon, a friend of the Sun, adds adaptability and a gentler touch.
- Chitra, padas 1–2 (23°20′–30°, lord Mars): the bright jewel. Design, structure and a wish to make something beautiful and exact; Mars, another friend, lends energy.
House placement depends on the lagna
- Virgo lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun ruling the 12th. A quiet, service-oriented presence, sometimes linked with foreign places or retreat.
- Aries lagna: the 6th house, Virgo's natural house, with the 5th lord here. Traditionally the Sun does well in the 6th, an upachaya house; see Sun in the 6th house.
- Sagittarius lagna: the 10th house with digbala, the 9th lord in the 10th. Fortune and career join, a much-valued combination; see Sun in the 10th house.
- Leo lagna: the 2nd house, the lagna lord among family, speech and wealth.
- Capricorn lagna: the 9th house, with the 8th lord in the house of dharma.
- Pisces lagna: the 7th house, with the 6th lord facing the lagna.
From Virgo the Sun's full aspect (drishti) falls on Pisces, a friend's sign ruled by Jupiter.
As the Sun transits Virgo
The gochar lasts about 31 days from Kanya Sankranti. Tradition reads the month as a good time for work, order, health routines and settling accounts. As always, the personal effect is read from your Moon sign: the Sun helps most in transit through the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon. The Sun transit tracker shows the live position.
Where people go wrong
- The zodiac mix-up. Western Virgo and Vedic Virgo overlap only briefly. The sidereal zodiac sits about 24° behind the tropical one; see Vedic vs Western sun sign.
- Assuming a neutral sign means nothing happens. It means the house and Mercury do more of the talking.
- Expecting the Sun to be modest. Virgo channels pride into quality; the pride is still there.
- Isolating one factor. The lagna, aspects, conjunctions, the navamsa and the current dasha all shape the result.
