This is Ketu in sidereal Virgo, the Kanya rashi, where the Lahiri ayanamsa puts the sign some 24 degrees behind the tropical Virgo of Western charts. A Western "Ketu in Libra" often turns out to be here, while a Western "Ketu in Virgo" usually belongs to sidereal Leo. In Kanya the node of detachment meets Mercury's sign of analysis, craft and service, and the placement is usually read as precise, practical skill offered without much need for reward.
The maiden with grain and fire
Virgo is earth, dual (dvisvabhava), even and feminine, the natural 6th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the waist and intestines. Its symbol is a maiden in a boat holding grain and fire: careful work, harvest and purification. Ketu brings instinct, detachment and skills that seem already learned. Together they usually suggest:
- Fine analytical ability. Spotting the flaw, the missing step or the pattern, often before anyone else.
- Service without self-importance. Work in healing, care, accounts, editing, law or technical support, done well and quietly.
- A calm way with problems. Disputes, debts and obstacles, the 6th-house themes, are handled with less anxiety than most people feel.
- Letting go of perfectionism, over time. Early on Virgo's standards and Ketu's dissatisfaction can combine into self-criticism.
- Health habits followed by intuition rather than by the book, with the waist and digestion as the sign's traditional body area.
Dignity and the lord Mercury
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Ketu no own sign. Its exaltation is set in Scorpio by many texts and in Sagittarius by others; some make it co-ruler of Scorpio. Virgo is outside that argument, so the site lists the dignity as not fixed.
The sign lord, Mercury, matters more. A well-placed Mercury gives this Ketu clean reasoning, good hands and a knack for practical systems. A troubled Mercury can make the same mind nervous, over-detailed or unsure of its own conclusions. Conjunctions weigh heavily too: Mercury itself here beside Ketu is very different from Mars or Saturn beside it.
Why is Virgo often called a good sign for Ketu? Not because of any dignity, but because it is the natural 6th, and the nodes are widely held to give good results in the 6th house. That is a house argument transferred to the sign, and it holds best when your lagna actually puts Ketu in the 6th.
Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and Chitra
- Uttara Phalguni (padas 2 to 4, 0° to 10°, lord Sun): patronage and dependable help. Ketu here often serves an institution or a cause faithfully.
- Hasta (10° to 23°20′, lord Moon): the hand. Craft, healing touch, skilful work with the fingers, and a sensitive, intuitive mind.
- Chitra (padas 1 and 2, 23°20′ to 30°, lord Mars): the bright jewel, the architect's star. With Mars as star lord, Ketu's Mars-like nature gives design, engineering or surgical precision.
Lagna by lagna
- Virgo lagna: the 1st house, with Mercury ruling the lagna and Ketu's sign.
- Aries lagna: the 6th house, Virgo's natural place, a dusthana that is also an upachaya; read Ketu in the 6th house.
- Gemini lagna: the 4th house, with Mercury as lagna lord.
- Taurus lagna: the 5th house of study and children.
- Pisces lagna: the 7th house, with Rahu in the 1st.
- Capricorn lagna: the 9th house of fortune and teachers.
- Sagittarius lagna: the 10th house; skilled work and service shape the career.
Rahu in Pisces
Ketu in Virgo always places Rahu in Pisces. Ketu drops the need to control details; Rahu reaches for the boundless, the imaginative and the spiritual, or for travel and distant places. The person may be very practical by habit while hungering for meaning, faith or escape. Ketu's 7th aspect, where it is counted, falls on Pisces; the 5th and 9th aspects of the nodes are disputed.
As a transit
Ketu moves in reverse, entering Virgo from Libra and passing on to Leo after usually about 1 year 6 months; the dates are listed above. The passage is traditionally read as a time to simplify routines, reconsider jobs and service roles, and settle old disputes. By the node rule of gochar, Cancer, Aries and Scorpio Moon signs, for whom Virgo is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, usually find it easier. Follow it on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
In the seven-year Ketu mahadasha, this placement often shows as a change in daily work, a turn towards healing or technical study, or the quiet resolution of problems that once seemed large.
Common misreadings
- Predicting illness. A traditional body association is not a diagnosis.
- Calling Virgo Ketu's exaltation. The 6th-sign argument is about the house, not dignity.
- Reading the sign alone. Mercury, the lagna, conjunctions, navamsa and dasha all change the picture.
