Scorpio here is sidereal Vrishchika, set by the Lahiri ayanamsa about 24 degrees behind the tropical Scorpio of Western astrology. So a Western "Ketu in Sagittarius" is often Ketu in sidereal Scorpio, and a Western Scorpio Ketu frequently belongs to Libra. This is the sign most often named as Ketu's exaltation, though not by every text, and the placement is usually read as a penetrating, instinctive mind that is at home with depth, secrets and crisis.
The scorpion and the headless body
Scorpio is water, fixed (sthira), even and feminine, the natural 8th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the reproductive organs and the north. Its symbol is the scorpion, hidden and self-protective. It governs what lies under the surface: research, secrets, transformation, shared resources and endings that lead somewhere new. Ketu is the node of endings, moksha and knowledge that arrives without explanation, so the match is close. Traditional readings describe:
- Depth of perception. The person sees motives and hidden causes quickly, often without saying so.
- Steadiness in crisis. Emergencies, losses and sudden changes are met with unusual calm.
- Research and investigation. Medicine, psychology, forensic or detective work, astrology, mining, anything that digs.
- A quiet spiritual pull. Scorpio's intensity and Ketu's detachment often turn towards meditation or hidden disciplines.
- Privacy. A strong reluctance to be fully known.
Exalted, co-ruler, or neither?
This is where the texts disagree most openly, so here are the views side by side:
- Scorpio as exaltation. Many authorities give Ketu's exaltation (uchcha) here, and Rahu's debilitation, with Rahu exalted in Taurus.
- Sagittarius as exaltation. Other texts put Ketu's exaltation in Sagittarius, and its debility in Gemini, leaving Scorpio outside the scheme.
- Co-rulership. Some authors make Ketu a co-ruler of Scorpio alongside Mars, which fits its Mars-like nature.
- No sign at all. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Ketu no own sign, and reads the nodes through their dispositor.
The site therefore marks the dignity as not fixed. If you use the Scorpio school, read "exalted" as a bonus on top of the core method, not a replacement for it. The core method is the dispositor, Mars. Ketu is said to act like Mars, so in a Mars sign it is usually comfortable. A strong Mars gives this Ketu courage, surgical precision and resilience. A strained Mars can make the same intensity feel secretive or tense.
Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha
- Vishakha (pada 4, 0° to 3°20′, lord Jupiter): the last pada of the goal-driven star. A brief, purposeful opening.
- Anuradha (3°20′ to 16°40′, lord Saturn): devotion and friendship in hard places. Ketu here is often loyal, disciplined and quietly spiritual.
- Jyeshtha (16°40′ to 30°, lord Mercury): the eldest, the protector. A sharp, strategic mind that carries responsibility. The last degree of Scorpio is a gandanta point, where water gives way to fire and to Mula, one of Ketu's own stars.
By lagna
- Scorpio lagna: the 1st house, with Mars as lagna lord.
- Aries lagna: the 8th house, Scorpio's natural place; read Ketu in the 8th house for research, inheritance and transformation.
- Taurus lagna: the 7th house, with Rahu rising in Taurus.
- Leo lagna: the 4th house, where Mars is the yogakaraka.
- Cancer lagna: the 5th house; Mars is the yogakaraka here as well, and the 5th is a trikona.
- Pisces lagna: the 9th house of teachers and belief.
- Aquarius lagna: the 10th house; work in hidden or technical fields suits it.
Rahu in Taurus
Ketu in Scorpio places Rahu in Taurus. Ketu lets go of control over crises and hidden power; Rahu wants stability, possessions, good food and beautiful things. In the school that exalts both nodes here, this is the "strongest" nodal axis, though strength still means the planets do their own work well, not that life is easy. Ketu's 7th aspect, where used, falls on Taurus; the 5th and 9th aspects of the nodes are disputed.
As a transit
Ketu travels in reverse, entering Scorpio from Sagittarius and moving on to Libra after usually about 1 year 6 months; the dates are listed above. The passage is traditionally read as a period of inner investigation, clearing out old attachments and dealing calmly with shared money or family matters. Virgo, Gemini and Capricorn Moon signs, for whom Scorpio is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, usually find it easier under the classical node rule. Track it on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
In the seven-year Ketu mahadasha, Scorpio Ketu often deepens research, spiritual practice or healing work, and cuts cleanly through situations that had dragged on.
Common misreadings
- Stating exaltation as fact. It is a well-known view, not a consensus.
- Treating the 8th-sign link as danger. Scorpio's themes are depth and change, not misfortune.
- Skipping Mars, conjunctions, navamsa and dasha. They decide what the placement actually does.
