In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun moves through Vrishchika from about 16–17 November to 15–16 December, while the Western "Sun in Scorpio" (tropical) spans 22–24 October to 21–22 November. The practical upshot: a Western Scorpio is usually a sidereal Libra Sun, and a Vedic Scorpio Sun mostly belongs to Western Sagittarians. Here the Sun is in the sign of its friend Mars, but a watery, fixed and hidden one, so the self becomes intense, private and hard to shake.
Light in a deep, fixed water sign
Scorpio is a water sign, fixed (sthira), even and feminine, ruled by Mars, with the scorpion as its symbol. It is the 8th sign of the kalapurusha, associated with the reproductive organs, with what is hidden, inherited or sudden, with research, crisis and regeneration. The Sun normally shines outward; in Scorpio it burns beneath the surface.
What people often notice:
- Quiet authority. Power is held without being advertised. The person prefers influence to a title.
- Endurance. A fixed sign gives staying power; the Sun here tends to outlast problems rather than dodge them.
- Investigative intelligence. Interest in what lies behind things: psychology, medicine, finance, research, the occult sciences.
- Loyalty and memory. Trust is given slowly and remembered for a long time, as are slights.
Tradition assigns Scorpio the reproductive organs; this is symbolic, not a medical reading.
Dignity: a friend's sign
For all 30° of Scorpio the Sun is in a friend's sign. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists Mars among the Sun's natural friends, and Mars regards the Sun as a friend in return. So the host is well-disposed; the unease, if any, comes from the sign's nature, not from the lord.
Mars's condition is therefore central. A dignified Mars gives this Sun courage and a clear aim; an afflicted Mars can make the intensity harder to direct. Mars also owns Aries, the Sun's exaltation sign, which ties the two even more closely. In your own chart, their temporary relationship (by house position from each other) can strengthen or dilute the natural friendship.
The nakshatras: Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha
- Vishakha, pada 4 (0°–3°20′, lord Jupiter): the last quarter of a goal-driven nakshatra; the Sun here is focused and determined, with Jupiter's friendly support.
- Anuradha (3°20′–16°40′, lord Saturn): devotion, friendship and organisation. Saturn is the Sun's enemy, yet Anuradha is famous for loyalty and cooperation; the Sun learns to lead through alliances and discipline.
- Jyeshtha (16°40′–30°, lord Mercury): the eldest. Seniority, protective responsibility and a sharp, sometimes guarded mind. The Sun here often takes charge early.
House placement by lagna
- Scorpio lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun as 10th lord in the lagna. Career and identity merge.
- Aries lagna: the 8th house, Scorpio's natural house, with the 5th lord here. Research, inheritance and transformation become personal themes; see Sun in the 8th house.
- Aquarius lagna: the 10th house, with digbala, the 7th lord at the top of the chart. Public work often runs through partnerships; see Sun in the 10th house.
- Leo lagna: the 4th house, the lagna lord at home, in a sign of depth and privacy.
- Cancer lagna: the 5th house, with the 2nd lord in a trikona.
- Pisces lagna: the 9th house, with the 6th lord in the house of fortune.
From Scorpio the Sun's full aspect (drishti) falls on Taurus, the sign of Venus, its enemy.
The yearly transit through Scorpio
The Sun's gochar through Scorpio takes about 30 days, beginning at Vrishchika Sankranti. Tradition reads it as a month for finishing hard tasks, attending to what is hidden or unresolved, and quiet effort. For your own chart count from the Moon sign: the Sun is considered supportive in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon. See the current position on the Sun transit page.
What the texts agree on, and where they differ
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra supplies the framework used here: the Sun's natural friends and enemies, its single full aspect, and the nature of Scorpio as a fixed, watery, feminine sign ruled by Mars. Later classical texts describe the Sun in Scorpio in broad strokes as brave, persistent and sharp-tongued, and sometimes mention trouble with those in power. Those portraits were written for the Sun read in isolation. Modern Parashari practice weighs the lagna, the house the Sun rules and the condition of Mars before saying anything so specific, and many readers treat the older lines as tendencies to test, not results to expect.
Misunderstandings
- "I'm a Scorpio" in Western terms usually means a sidereal Libra Sun; the difference is the ayanamsa. See Vedic vs Western sun sign.
- Reading intensity as darkness. Scorpio deepens the Sun; it does not make it sinister.
- Forgetting the 8th-sign symbolism is only symbolism. The actual house depends on your lagna.
- Treating one placement as the whole story. The house, conjunctions, navamsa and running dasha all matter.
