In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun is in Simha from about 16–17 August to 16–17 September; the Western "Sun in Leo" (tropical) runs 22–23 July to 22–23 August. So if you were born in late July or early August and call yourself a Leo, your Vedic Sun is most likely in Cancer, while a sidereal Leo Sun belongs mostly to people a Western chart calls Virgo. The Sun in Leo means the Sun at home: the planet of the soul, authority and self-respect in its own sign, steady, generous and sure of its place.
The king on his own throne
Leo is a fire sign, fixed (sthira), odd and masculine, with the lion as its symbol. It is the 5th sign of the kalapurusha, the sign of intelligence, creativity, children, devotion and the merit carried from the past. The Sun rules it, so nothing has to be negotiated with a host. Where the exalted Sun of Aries is dynamic and pioneering, the Sun in Leo is settled: it rules by presence rather than by conquest.
What this often looks like:
- Natural authority. The person expects to be taken seriously and usually is. Responsibility sits easily on them.
- Generosity and warmth. A lion that is secure can afford to protect and give.
- Creative self-expression. The 5th-sign themes of performance, teaching, children and ideas carry the Sun's light.
- Pride and fixity. A fixed fire sign does not bend easily. The shadow side is a need for recognition and difficulty taking advice.
Tradition gives Leo the stomach region and the Sun the heart and vitality; that is symbolic, not a health forecast.
Moolatrikona and own sign
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra divides the Sun's dignity in Leo into two parts:
- 0°–20°: moolatrikona. Ranked just below exaltation, it is the Sun working in its most official, dharma-driven capacity.
- 20°–30°: own sign (swakshetra). Still fully at home, a little more personal and private.
A few later authors give slightly different moolatrikona spans; this site follows the Parashari division above.
Because the Sun is its own sign lord, the usual question of friendship with the dispositor does not arise. The Sun forms no Mahapurusha yoga (those five yogas belong to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn in own or exaltation signs in a kendra), so a strong Leo Sun is judged simply by its own dignity, house and associations.
Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni
- Magha (0°–13°20′, lord Ketu): the throne of the ancestors. The Sun here carries lineage, tradition and a sense of inherited duty; Ketu adds a detached, sometimes austere dignity.
- Purva Phalguni (13°20′–26°40′, lord Venus): pleasure, rest, art and affection. Venus is the Sun's enemy, so this middle stretch mixes the Sun's gravity with charm and a love of enjoyment, sometimes uneasily.
- Uttara Phalguni, pada 1 (26°40′–30°, lord Sun): the Sun in its own nakshatra and own sign together, emphasising patronage, contracts and keeping one's word.
Every lagna: the Sun sits in the house it rules
Since the Sun owns only Leo, a Leo Sun always occupies its own house, whatever the lagna. That strengthens the house, though what the house means differs:
- Leo lagna: the 1st house, the lagnesh in the lagna. A self-reliant, visible personality; see Sun in the 1st house.
- Aries lagna: the 5th house, Leo's natural house. Intelligence, children and creativity are highlighted; see Sun in the 5th house.
- Scorpio lagna: the 10th house, where the 10th lord is in its own sign and has digbala. Among the strongest career placements the Sun can have.
- Sagittarius lagna: the 9th house, the lord of fortune and the father at home.
- Aquarius lagna: the 7th house, a partner or business associate with authority.
- Capricorn lagna: the 8th house, where a strong 8th lord in its own sign is read as a resilient, research-minded placement rather than a troubled one.
From Leo the Sun's full aspect (drishti) falls on Aquarius, Saturn's sign and the 7th from Leo, so partners, contracts and dealings with the public feel the Sun's heat.
The Sun's transit through Leo
The Sun's gochar through Leo takes about 31 days, starting at Simha Sankranti. Tradition reads it as a month when authority, government matters, recognition and questions of self-respect come forward. For you, count the house from your Moon sign; the Sun is traditionally favourable in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon. The Sun transit page shows where it is today.
Western Leo and Vedic Leo are not the same
- Different zodiacs. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac tied to the seasons; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac tied to the stars, and the gap (the ayanamsa) is about 24° now. The full explanation is in Vedic vs Western sun sign.
- The Sun is not your rashi. In Vedic astrology your rashi is the Moon's sign.
- Own sign is not a guarantee. A strong Sun can still be combined with difficult houses, conjunctions or a hard dasha; the navamsa also matters.
Compare with Sun in Aries, its exaltation, and Sun in Libra, its debilitation.
