Purva Phalguni is the eleventh nakshatra, spanning 13°20′ to 26°40′ of sidereal Leo, and it is ruled by Venus with Bhaga, the god of good fortune and delight, as its deity. It is the nakshatra of rest after work, of romance, celebration and creative play, and it gives Leo's warmth a softer, more sociable face.
"Purva" means former and "Phalguni" refers to the pair of star groups in the Lion's hindquarters. Its stars are usually identified as Zosma and Chertan (Delta and Theta Leonis). The "latter" Phalguni follows immediately after.
Where Purva Phalguni sits
The whole nakshatra lies in Leo, after Magha and before Uttara Phalguni. Its first two padas, up to 20° Leo, are still inside the Sun's moolatrikona zone, so the royal Leo dignity carries over from Magha. The last two padas move past it into a looser, more personal Leo.
Magha sits on the throne; Purva Phalguni steps down to the palace garden. The authority is still there, but the attention turns to enjoyment, family life, art and the people one loves.
Lord and deity: Venus and Bhaga
