Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras, covering 0° to 13°20′ of sidereal Aries, and its lord is Ketu. Its deities are the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin physicians of the gods, and its symbol is a horse's head, so the nakshatra is tied to speed, healing and new beginnings.
Because it sits at the very start of the zodiac, Ashwini is where the Moon, the Sun and every planet begin a fresh round. That sense of "first step" runs through almost everything tradition says about it.
Where Ashwini sits in the sky
The whole of Ashwini lies inside Aries, a fire sign ruled by Mars. So there are two rulers at work: Ketu as the nakshatra lord and Mars as the sign lord. Mars gives drive and courage; Ketu gives instinct, detachment and a knack for acting before thinking it through. Together they describe someone who moves quickly and trusts their first impulse.
The Sun is exalted in Aries, with its classical exaltation point at 10° Aries, which falls within Ashwini. The Sun here is traditionally strong: clear, confident and willing to lead.
Ashwini is also the first of the three nakshatras Ketu rules, with Magha and Mula. All three sit at the start of a fire sign, right after a water sign ends. This is the gandanta pattern, covered below.
The Ashwini Kumaras and the horse's head
In the Rig Veda the Ashvins are twin horsemen who arrive at dawn in a golden chariot. They rescue people in trouble and heal the sick. Later stories call them sons of the Sun, born when their mother had taken the form of a mare, which is where the horse symbolism comes from. In the best-known tale they gave the aged sage Chyavana back his youth, and in return he secured them a share of the soma offering.
Three themes come from this myth, and astrologers still use them. First, healing and first aid, the help that arrives quickly. Second, speed: the horse has always stood for swift movement and fresh energy. Third, youthfulness. Ashwini natives are often described as young at heart and happiest starting something.
Gana, yoni, nadi and what they mean for matching
Ashwini is of the Deva gana (divine temperament), which tradition reads as generous, straightforward and fairly easy to get along with. Its yoni is the horse (male); its partner yoni is Shatabhisha, the female horse. Its nadi is Adi (vata).
These three are not just labels; they feed directly into gun milan. Gana compatibility is worth 6 points, yoni 4 and nadi 8. Two people who share the same nadi score zero on nadi, so an Ashwini native matched with another Adi-nadi nakshatra (Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada) would see that koota as "nadi dosha", subject to the usual exceptions. Gun milan compares only the two Moons, though, and one factor never decides a chart. The whole kundli of both people is read together.
Muhurta nature: swift (kshipra)
The Muhurta Chintamani puts Ashwini among the kshipra, or laghu, nakshatras, with Pushya, Hasta and Abhijit. These are light and quick. They are favoured for things that should begin smoothly and move fast: starting lessons, beginning treatment, buying and selling, short journeys, learning a skill or an art, and wearing new ornaments. A muhurat search will often surface an Ashwini day for such work.
Temperament: tendencies, not fixed traits
When the Moon is in Ashwini, the mind tends to be quick, eager and restless for the next thing. Common strengths are initiative, courage in a crisis, a practical instinct to help, and a fresh, cheerful manner. Many Ashwini people are drawn to work where fast response matters, such as care, sport, travel, transport or any field that rewards being first.
The growth areas are the same qualities pushed too far. Impatience, starting more than they finish, and speaking before listening. Ketu's influence can also give a streak of detachment: interest can drop suddenly once the novelty wears off. Learning to stay with something after the first rush is usually the lesson.
The four padas of Ashwini
Each pada covers 3°20′. Because Ashwini begins the zodiac, its padas map onto the first four navamsa signs.
Pada 1: 0° to 3°20′ Aries (Aries navamsa)
The purest Ashwini. The sign and the navamsa are both Aries, so this pada is vargottama, which tradition treats as a strengthening of whatever sits here. It is energetic, pioneering and direct. This is also the gandanta portion at the Pisces–Aries junction.
Pada 2: 3°20′ to 6°40′ Aries (Taurus navamsa)
Venus rules this navamsa, which slows the horse down a little. Steadier, more practical, more interested in comfort, money and material results. Speed is kept for things that actually pay off.
Pada 3: 6°40′ to 10° Aries (Gemini navamsa)
Mercury's navamsa brings curiosity, talk and quick learning. This pada suits communication, writing, trade and anything that needs a nimble mind. It can scatter its energy across too many interests.
Pada 4: 10° to 13°20′ Aries (Cancer navamsa)
The Moon's navamsa softens Ashwini's edge into care. The healer's side comes forward here: protective, emotional and attached to home and family.
Naming syllables
The traditional naam akshar for Ashwini are Chu, Che, Cho and La, one per pada. A child born with the Moon in pada 1 would, by this custom, get a name beginning with "Chu"; pada 4 gives "La". Regional traditions vary a little, and families often simply choose from the four.
A note on gandanta
The last pada of Revati and the first pada of Ashwini meet at the point where watery Pisces ends and fiery Aries begins. Classical texts call such junctions gandanta, a "knot", and advise a careful reading of a Moon or lagna placed very close to it. It describes a transition point, a life that tends to bring clear turning points. It is not a sentence, and many well-lived charts have it.
