Bharani is the second nakshatra, running from 13°20′ to 26°40′ of sidereal Aries, and it is ruled by Venus. Its deity is Yama, lord of dharma and death, and its symbol is the yoni, the womb, so Bharani is the nakshatra of bearing, holding and bringing things to birth.
The name comes from the root bhṛ, "to carry" or "to bear". Many of its themes follow from that word: carrying responsibility, carrying a child, carrying the weight of a decision.
Venus in Mars's sign
Bharani lies entirely in Aries, so Venus as nakshatra lord works inside a sign owned by Mars. This is a lively pairing. Venus seeks pleasure, beauty, art and relationship; Mars adds heat, will and appetite. Bharani people often feel things strongly and want them fully, whether that is love, food, work or a cause.
Venus rules three nakshatras: Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha. All three carry Venus's creativity. Bharani's version is the most raw, because it sits in a fire sign right after Ashwini's burst of beginning.
One classical point sits here too. Saturn is debilitated in Aries, with its deepest point at 20° Aries, inside Bharani. Saturn in Bharani is traditionally read as a planet out of its comfort zone: discipline meets impatience. Whether that weakness is cancelled depends on the rest of the chart (neecha bhanga).
Yama: the first to walk the path
Yama is often feared, but the older picture is gentler. In Vedic lore Yama is the first mortal to die. He found the way to the world of the ancestors and now guides others along it, which is why he is also called Dharmaraja, the king of right order. In the Katha Upanishad the boy Nachiketa goes to Yama's house. Yama does not punish him; he teaches him, and what he teaches is the nature of the self.
So Bharani's deity stands for limits, accountability and the truth that every beginning has an end. Tradition reads Bharani natives as people with a strong sense of right and wrong, able to face hard facts, and able to handle endings, transitions and responsibilities that others avoid. There is also a long custom of Bharani Shraddha, when the Moon passes Bharani during Pitru Paksha and families remember their ancestors.
Symbol: the yoni
The womb stands for what is held, protected and slowly formed before it appears. It points to gestation, patience in creation, sexuality as a creative force and the courage involved in birth. Put together with Yama, the symbol shows Bharani holding both ends of life, arrival and departure.

Bharani is Manushya gana, the human temperament: practical, ambitious and interested in the world. Its yoni is the elephant (male), whose partner is Revati (female elephant). Its nadi is Madhya (pitta).

The Muhurta Chintamani groups Bharani with Magha, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha and Purva Bhadrapada as ugra, or fierce. Tradition assigns these to firm, forceful acts, such as dealing with opponents, demolition, work with fire or metal, and ending what must end.
