On this page

Vedic astrology places Jupiter in Leo by the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars through the Lahiri ayanamsa and running about 24 degrees behind the tropical signs. That is why a Western "Jupiter in Leo" is often sidereal Cancer, and a Western Virgo Jupiter may be Simha here. In sidereal Simha, Guru is the honoured guest of the Sun, a mutual friend: wisdom with a throne, expressed through dignity, leadership, generosity and a wish to be of real use to others.

The counsellor at the royal court

Leo is fire, fixed (sthira), odd and masculine, the 5th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the stomach, facing east, symbolised by the lion. It is the sign of authority, confidence, creativity and the heart's pride. Jupiter is the planet of wisdom, teachers, children, dharma and fortune.

In myth Brihaspati is counsellor to Indra, king of the gods, and Jupiter in the Sun's sign plays much the same role. Typical descriptions:

  • Principled leadership. A sense that authority exists to serve, and a wish to lead by standards rather than by force.
  • Generous presence. Warmth, hospitality and a liking for large gestures, sometimes a little theatrical.
  • Pride in learning. Knowledge is part of identity. This can mean real mastery, or occasional over-confidence in one's own views.
  • Creative and child-centred. Leo is the natural 5th sign, the house of children, creativity and intelligence, which Jupiter signifies too.

Dignity: mutual friendship with the Sun

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists the Sun, Moon and Mars as Jupiter's friends, and the Sun counts Jupiter a friend in return. Leo is therefore a friend's sign for Jupiter across all 30 degrees, and the relationship is as easy as it gets outside Jupiter's own and exaltation signs.

The Sun's own condition still matters. A strong, dignified Sun makes this Jupiter confident and respected; a weak or afflicted Sun leaves Jupiter serving a shaky court. If the Sun and Jupiter sit together in Leo, many astrologers note the added authority, while also checking whether Jupiter is combust (asta), since a planet too close to the Sun is read as less able to express itself.

Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni

  • Magha (0° to 13°20′, lord Ketu): the throne of the ancestors. Jupiter here is linked with lineage, tradition, respect for elders and a sense of inherited duty.
  • Purva Phalguni (13°20′ to 26°40′, lord Venus): rest, pleasure and creative joy. Jupiter in a Venus-ruled star is traditionally read as enjoying the arts and comfort, with some tension between Jupiter's seriousness and Venus's ease.
  • Uttara Phalguni (26°40′ to 30°, pada 1 only, lord Sun): patronage and promises kept. Jupiter here is the loyal patron and dependable friend.

Which house? Read from your lagna

  • Leo lagna: Jupiter is in the 1st and rules the 5th and 8th. See Jupiter in the 1st house.
  • Aries lagna: Leo is the 5th house, its natural position, and Jupiter as 9th lord sits in the 5th: a trikona lord in a trikona, admired in tradition for fortune through intelligence and children. See Jupiter in the 5th house.
  • Sagittarius lagna: Leo is the 9th house, and the lagna lord sits in the house of dharma and fortune. See Jupiter in the 9th house.
  • Scorpio lagna: Leo is the 10th, with Jupiter ruling the 2nd and 5th, bringing wealth and intelligence into career.
  • Aquarius lagna: Leo is the 7th, and Jupiter carries its 2nd and 11th lordships into partnership.

A note that some astrologers raise: for Aries lagna the 5th house Jupiter is the karaka of the 5th sitting in the 5th. A later maxim holds that a karaka in its own house can weaken that house's matters; others think the maxim is overused and apply it mostly to Jupiter in the 5th for children. Opinions differ, and it is never read alone.

From Leo Jupiter aspects Sagittarius, its own sign (5th aspect), Aquarius (7th) and Aries (9th), a friend's sign. All three are fire or air signs, and the aspect on its own sign is read as protective.

Guru gochar in Simha

Jupiter usually spends about thirteen months in Leo in gochar, with occasional retrograde loops that split the stay. The stays are listed above; the Jupiter transit page tracks the planet as it moves.

Counted from the natal Moon, Jupiter's supportive positions are the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. A Leo Jupiter occupies them for Moon signs Cancer (2nd), Aries (5th), Aquarius (7th), Sagittarius (9th) and Libra (11th). For those people the year is traditionally read for growth in the corresponding area: family and savings, children and study, partnership, fortune and teachers, or gains. For other Moon signs it is a less emphasised year, not a difficult one. The natal chart and the dasha running at the time set the limits.

Differences of view and misreadings

  • Sun-sign confusion. "Jupiter in Leo" in a Western chart is not the same as sidereal Leo; many will find Jupiter in Cancer, exalted, in the Vedic chart.
  • Friend's sign is not own sign. Leo gives comfort, not the full strength of Sagittarius or Pisces.
  • Combustion. Jupiter close to the Sun in Leo can be combust; check the degrees.
  • One placement as a life story. Lordship and house change the picture more than the sign does.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jupiter in Leo a good placement?

Leo is a friend's sign for Jupiter, and the friendship is mutual: Jupiter counts the Sun a friend and the Sun returns it. Jupiter is comfortable here and tends to show as dignified, generous leadership. The house, aspects, navamsa and dasha still decide the result.

Why is Jupiter in Leo linked with children and intelligence?

Leo is the natural 5th sign of the zodiac, and the 5th house governs children, intelligence and creativity. Jupiter is the natural karaka of the 5th house, so the sign and the planet share themes.

Which signs does Jupiter aspect from Leo?

Sagittarius, its own sign, with the 5th aspect; Aquarius with the 7th; and Aries with the 9th. The houses these occupy depend on your lagna.
