Jupiter in Taurus here means sidereal Vrishabha, measured with the Lahiri ayanamsa, a zodiac that runs some 24 degrees behind the tropical one used in Western astrology. Many people read as "Jupiter in Taurus" in a Western chart will find it in sidereal Aries on this site. Placed in Vrishabha, Guru lives in the steady earth sign of Venus, the rival teacher: wisdom that is asked to become practical, patient and concerned with what lasts, sometimes a little against its own grain.
Two teachers, one sign
In the old story Brihaspati teaches the devas and Shukra teaches the asuras. The friendship tables of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra keep the echo: Jupiter counts Venus as an enemy, while Venus regards Jupiter as merely neutral. So Taurus is formally an enemy's sign for Jupiter across all 30 degrees.
That label is often misread. It does not make Jupiter malefic. It means the guest and the host value different things. Jupiter prizes meaning, principle and the long view of dharma; Venus prizes comfort, beauty, pleasure and harmony. A Jupiter in Taurus has to express its wisdom in the language of a sensual, settled sign, and many people with this placement do so gracefully.
Always check the landlord. A strong, well-placed Venus gives the Jupiter in its sign a good house to live in; a weak Venus asks more of Jupiter.
What the placement tends to show
Taurus is earth, fixed (sthira), even and feminine, the natural 2nd sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the face, facing south, pictured as a bull. Jupiter brings wisdom, teachers, children, dharma, fortune and wealth. Common descriptions:
- Wisdom with a use. Ideas are valued when they produce something lasting: a home, a skill, a savings habit, a well-tended family.
- Measured speech. The 2nd sign governs speech; Jupiter here is often read as a calm, considered way of talking, and an interest in teaching through words, music or food traditions.
- Loyal values. Fixed signs hold on. Beliefs change slowly, which gives steadiness and occasionally stubbornness.
- Comfort and plenty. Later classical texts describe this Jupiter with good things of life. Whether that becomes indulgence or generosity depends on the rest of the chart.
Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira
- Krittika (0° to 10°, padas 2 to 4, lord Sun): the Sun's fire in an earth sign. Jupiter here is linked with firm standards, a sharp sense of right and wrong, and a teacher who corrects.
- Rohini (10° to 23°20′, lord Moon): the star of growth and fertility. Both its lord and its sign are gentle; Jupiter in Rohini is traditionally read as nurturing, creative and fond of beauty.
- Mrigashira (23°20′ to 30°, padas 1 and 2, lord Mars): the searching deer. Here Jupiter becomes curious and restless, always looking for the better answer.
All three lords (Sun, Moon and Mars) are Jupiter's friends, which softens the enemy-sign picture somewhat at the nakshatra level.
Which house? It depends on the lagna
- Taurus lagna: Jupiter is in the 1st and rules the 8th and 11th. It keeps its directional strength in the lagna, though as 8th lord its gifts come mixed with change and research.
- Aries lagna: Taurus is the 2nd house of family and wealth, and Jupiter as 9th and 12th lord brings fortune into resources. The natural reading is close to Jupiter in the 2nd house.
- Virgo lagna: Taurus is the 9th, and Jupiter, lord of the 4th and 7th, sits in the house of dharma. See Jupiter in the 9th house.
- Scorpio lagna: Taurus is the 7th, and Jupiter carries its 2nd and 5th lordships into partnership.
- Pisces lagna: the lagna lord sits in the 3rd house of effort and communication.
From Taurus Jupiter aspects Virgo (5th), Scorpio (7th) and Capricorn (9th), its sign of debility, so that glance comes from a Jupiter that is itself not at home.
Guru gochar through Vrishabha
As a gochar, Jupiter usually stays in Taurus for about twelve months, with retrograde motion sometimes cutting a pass short. The exact stays are listed above; the Jupiter transit page shows where Guru is now.
Counted from the natal Moon, the classical favourable positions are the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. A Taurus Jupiter occupies those places for Moon signs Aries (2nd), Capricorn (5th), Scorpio (7th), Virgo (9th) and Cancer (11th). For them the passage is traditionally read as support for the matters of that house, gradual rather than dramatic. For the other Moon signs the year is read as less supported, which is a long way from bad. What any transit can give still rests on the natal chart and the running mahadasha.
Where schools disagree, and misreadings
- Natural versus compound friendship. The enemy label is the natural (naisargika) relationship. Many astrologers also compute the temporary (tatkalika) relationship from the actual chart; if Venus and Jupiter are placed well from each other, the combined result can be neutral.
- "Enemy sign means bad results." It means friction of temperament. A Jupiter in Taurus in a kendra, aspected well, can do a great deal.
- Western sign confusion. A tropical Taurus Jupiter is often sidereal Aries, a friend's sign.
- Ignoring the navamsa. A Jupiter uncomfortable in the rashi can be strong in the navamsa, and vice versa.
