The Cancer meant here is sidereal Karka, fixed to the stars with the Lahiri ayanamsa, which sits about 24 degrees behind the Western tropical zodiac. So if a Western report puts your Jupiter in Cancer, it may be in sidereal Gemini, while a tropical Leo Jupiter can turn out to be exalted here. In Karka, Guru is exalted (uchcha), strongest at 5 degrees: wisdom at its most caring, protective and generous, in the Moon's sign of home and feeling.
Why Cancer suits Jupiter
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Jupiter's exaltation in Cancer and its debilitation in the opposite sign, Capricorn, both deepest at 5 degrees. The whole of Cancer counts as exaltation, with the peak near that point.
Cancer is water, movable (chara), even and feminine, the natural 4th sign of the kalapurusha, associated with the heart and chest, facing north, symbolised by the crab. It is the sign of mother, home, nourishment and emotional security. Jupiter is the karaka of wisdom, teachers, children, dharma and fortune. Put a teacher in the house of the mother, and the teaching becomes nurture. That is the traditional logic of this exaltation: knowledge offered with care, faith that shows as kindness.
The sign's lord is the Moon. Jupiter regards the Moon as a friend; the Moon regards Jupiter as neutral. So the host is at least not hostile, and a strong Moon strengthens an already strong guest further.
What exalted Jupiter tends to show
- Generosity and protection. People with this placement are often the ones who look after others: family, students, the vulnerable.
- Faith that feels warm. Belief tends to be devotional rather than argumentative.
- A good name in the family and community. Later classical texts describe exalted Jupiter with respect, learning and comfort.
- Children and teachers. As karaka of both, a dignified Jupiter is read as support in those areas, subject to the 5th and 9th houses themselves.
The nakshatras: Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha
- Punarvasu (0° to 3°20′, pada 4 only, lord Jupiter): the last quarter of Jupiter's own star, a gentle, hopeful start to the sign.
- Pushya (3°20′ to 16°40′, lord Saturn): the nourisher, whose presiding deity in tradition is Brihaspati himself. The deepest exaltation at 5 degrees falls here. Jupiter in Pushya is often considered one of the finest positions it can hold, even though Saturn rules the nakshatra.
- Ashlesha (16°40′ to 30°, lord Mercury): the coiled serpent, linked with penetrating insight and a strong grip. Jupiter here remains exalted but gains a subtler, more strategic, sometimes secretive tone.
Hamsa yoga: which lagnas get it
Hamsa yoga is one of the five Mahapurusha yogas. It forms when Jupiter sits in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the lagna. For Jupiter in Cancer that means four rising signs:
- Aries lagna: Cancer is the 4th house, and Jupiter is lord of the 9th and 12th. An exalted 9th lord in the 4th is a fine combination for home, education and peace of mind. See Jupiter in the 4th house.
- Cancer lagna: Jupiter is exalted in the 1st and rules the 6th and 9th. See Jupiter in the 1st house.
- Libra lagna: Cancer is the 10th house, with Jupiter ruling the 3rd and 6th. Hamsa yoga still forms, and career themes of teaching, law or counsel are commonly described.
- Capricorn lagna: Cancer is the 7th, and Jupiter, lord of the 3rd and 12th, sits exalted in the house of partnership.
The Panch Mahapurush yoga guide explains the five yogas together. For other lagnas the exaltation remains, just without the yoga: for Scorpio rising Cancer is the 9th house and Jupiter rules the 2nd and 5th, a much-admired placement; for Pisces rising the lagna lord is exalted in the 5th.
Aspects from Cancer
From Karka Jupiter aspects Scorpio with its 5th aspect, Capricorn with its 7th, and Pisces, its own sign, with its 9th. The 7th aspect lands on the very sign of its debilitation, and the 9th protects its own sign. Whatever houses these are for you receive a strong benefic's drishti.
Jupiter's transit through Cancer
In gochar, Jupiter usually spends about thirteen months in Cancer; retrograde motion can stretch a visit into two parts. The actual stays are shown above and on the Jupiter transit page.
Because Jupiter is exalted here, its passage through Cancer is often given extra attention. Traditionally the transit is read from the natal Moon, and the supportive positions are the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. With Jupiter in Cancer those are the Moon signs Gemini (2nd), Pisces (5th), Capricorn (7th), Scorpio (9th) and Virgo (11th). Other Moon signs are not harmed; the year is simply less emphasised for them. An exalted transiting Jupiter still works through the natal chart and the running mahadasha.
Where texts differ, and misreadings
- Exaltation is not everything. A combust, heavily aspected or poorly placed exalted Jupiter gives less; an exalted Jupiter in a dusthana often works through service or inner life.
- Lordship matters. For Leo lagna Cancer is the 12th house and Jupiter rules the 5th and 8th; for Sagittarius lagna it is the 8th. Exalted, yes, but working through hidden or transformative matters.
- Tropical confusion. A Western Cancer Jupiter is frequently sidereal Gemini, an enemy's sign. Check before celebrating.
Compare Jupiter in Capricorn, the opposite and debilitated position.
