The Leo on this page is sidereal Simha, measured with the Lahiri ayanamsa and sitting about 24 degrees behind the tropical sign of the same name. A Western chart's "Ketu in Virgo" is often Ketu in sidereal Leo, and a Western Leo Ketu frequently falls in Cancer. Ketu in Simha is the node of letting go in the Sun's royal sign, and the usual reading is genuine ability, authority or creative gift held with little need for applause.
A crown the wearer does not care for
Leo is fire, fixed (sthira), odd and masculine, the natural 5th sign of the kalapurusha, linked with the stomach, the east and the lion. It is the sign of rulership, creative pride, children, intelligence and devotion. Ketu, the body without the head, gives skill without the craving to be seen. Traditional readings of the blend include:
- Leadership that is reluctant. The person may be put in charge more than they seek it, and step aside when the role stops serving a purpose.
- Creative gift, lightly held. Ketu's inherited talent here often shows in art, performance, games, teaching or mantra, with little attachment to credit.
- An independent line on authority. Some distance from father figures, rulers or the establishment, without necessarily any rebellion.
- Children and study as areas where the person gives much but expects little, or where life takes an unusual course.
- The stomach as the sign's body part, mentioned in older writing as a mild traditional association.
The Sun as host
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives Ketu no own sign. Its exaltation is argued between Scorpio and Sagittarius, and some texts make it co-ruler of Scorpio. Leo sits outside that debate, so Ketu's dignity here is not fixed.
The sign lord, the Sun, therefore shapes the reading. The Sun is the planet of the confident self, and the nodes are the eclipse points that "swallow" it in the old story, so the relationship is a delicate one. A strong Sun, well placed by sign and house, lets this Ketu give dignity and self-possession without ego. A weakened Sun can leave the person unsure of their own authority, or uncomfortable with recognition. If the Sun itself joins Ketu, the solar eclipse theme is direct and is read together with the house and aspects.
Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni
- Magha (0° to 13°20′, all padas, lord Ketu): Ketu in its own nakshatra. Magha is the throne of the ancestors (pitris), so this section is linked with lineage, tradition and a quiet, inherited dignity. Its first degree is a gandanta point, the join between Cancer's water and Leo's fire.
- Purva Phalguni (13°20′ to 26°40′, lord Venus): rest, pleasure and creativity. Ketu here often enjoys life's comforts in bursts and then withdraws from them.
- Uttara Phalguni (pada 1, 26°40′ to 30°, lord Sun): patronage and contracts. A dutiful Ketu that keeps its word with little fuss.
By lagna
- Leo lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun as lagna lord and dispositor.
- Aries lagna: the 5th house, Leo's natural place; read Ketu in the 5th house for children, study and intelligence.
- Taurus lagna: the 4th house of home and inner peace.
- Aquarius lagna: the 7th house, with Rahu rising in the 1st.
- Sagittarius lagna: the 9th house of fortune and teachers, where the Sun rules the 9th.
- Scorpio lagna: the 10th house, with the Sun as 10th lord; career matters, but titles matter less.
Rahu in Aquarius
Ketu in Leo means Rahu in Aquarius. Ketu lets go of personal glory; Rahu reaches towards groups, networks, technology and causes larger than oneself. Many people with this axis would rather build something for a community than be crowned by it. Some modern authors treat Rahu as a co-ruler of Aquarius, though Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives that sign to Saturn alone. Ketu's 7th aspect, as generally used, also lands on Aquarius; its 5th and 9th aspects are disputed.
Ketu's transit through Leo
At the time of writing Ketu is moving through sidereal Leo; the current and next stays are listed above. Because it travels backwards, it arrives from Virgo and leaves for Cancer, usually after about 1 year 6 months. The passage is traditionally read as a time when ego, authority and creative ambition are quietly questioned, and when public figures may step back. By the gochar rule for the nodes, Gemini, Pisces and Libra Moon signs, for whom Leo is the 3rd, 6th or 11th, tend to find it easier. The live position is on the Ketu transit page.
In Ketu's dasha
The seven-year Ketu mahadasha often brings Leo themes to a turning point: stepping away from a role of authority, a shift in creative work, renewed interest in family roots or spiritual study.
Misreadings to avoid
- "Ketu in Leo means no confidence." It more often means confidence that does not need an audience.
- Forgetting the Sun. The sign lord carries much of the result.
- Reading the sign alone. Lagna, house, aspects, conjunctions, navamsa and dasha all change it.
