In Vedic (sidereal) astrology the Sun is in Tula from about 17–18 October to 16–17 November; the Western "Sun in Libra" (tropical) is 22–23 September to 22–24 October. So the Libra of Western horoscopes is mostly a sidereal Virgo Sun, and a Vedic Libra Sun usually belongs to someone a Western chart calls Scorpio. In Libra the Sun is debilitated: the planet of individual will is placed in the sign of balance and partnership, where it has to share the scales rather than hold the sceptre.
Why the Sun struggles in the sign of the scales
Libra is an air sign, movable (chara), odd and masculine, ruled by Venus, and its symbol is a man holding scales. It is the 7th sign of the kalapurusha, the sign of partnership, trade, negotiation and fairness. The Sun is about the single self standing at the centre. Libra is about the self in relation to another. The Sun's instinct to decide alone runs into a sign that asks it to weigh, consult and compromise.
This often shows as:
- Authority through agreement. The person gains standing by diplomacy, alliances and fair dealing rather than command.
- Sensitivity to approval. Self-worth can depend on how others respond; self-assertion may be delayed or indirect.
- A strong sense of justice. The scales make fairness personal, sometimes to the point of indecision.
- Relationships as the testing ground for confidence and self-respect.
Tradition links Libra with the lower abdomen; this is symbolic, not a health claim.
Debilitation, the sign lord and neecha-bhanga
The whole of Libra is the Sun's neecha sign, with the deepest debilitation at 10°, the exact opposite of its exaltation peak at 10° Aries. The sign lord is Venus, and the relationship is mutual enmity: the Sun regards Venus as an enemy and Venus regards the Sun the same way. Libra is also the exaltation sign of Saturn, the Sun's other great enemy, so in symbolic terms the king is weakest where the servant is strongest.
That is not the end of the story. Classical texts describe neecha-bhanga, the cancellation of debility. Commonly cited conditions include:
- Venus, the lord of Libra, being strong and in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon.
- Mars, the lord of Aries where the Sun is exalted, in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon.
- Saturn, which is exalted in Libra, in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon.
- The Sun gaining strength in the navamsa, for example by occupying Aries or Leo there.
Astrologers differ on how many conditions are needed and how much they undo. When cancellation is present, tradition often reads the life as one where early difficulty with authority turns into hard-won standing; see neech bhang raj yoga. Even without it, a debilitated Sun describes a style of self-expression, not a fate.
Chitra, Swati and Vishakha
- Chitra, padas 3–4 (0°–6°40′, lord Mars): design and polish. Mars, a friend of the Sun, gives this opening stretch more backbone.
- Swati (6°40′–20°, lord Rahu): the young shoot moved by the wind. Independent, adaptable, commercial. The deepest debilitation point at 10° lies here, and Rahu is no friend of the Sun, so this is where the Sun has to bend most.
- Vishakha, padas 1–3 (20°–30°, lord Jupiter): single-minded purpose. Jupiter, the Sun's friend, restores some focus and ambition.
House by lagna
- Libra lagna: the 1st house, with the Sun ruling the 11th. Presence comes through charm and social skill; see Sun in the 1st house.
- Aries lagna: the 7th house, Libra's natural house, with the 5th lord here; the Sun aspects the lagna, Aries, its exaltation sign. See Sun in the 7th house.
- Capricorn lagna: the 10th house, where the Sun has digbala even though debilitated, and rules the 8th. Directional strength is often counted as a real support.
- Leo lagna: the 3rd house, the debilitated lagna lord in an upachaya house, which tends to improve with effort and age.
- Aquarius lagna: the 9th house, with the 7th lord in the house of fortune.
- Sagittarius lagna: the 11th house, with the 9th lord among gains and friends.
From Libra the Sun's full aspect (drishti) falls on Aries, its own exaltation sign.
The transit through Libra
The Sun's gochar through Libra lasts about 30 days, from Tula Sankranti. It is traditionally seen as a month when official matters move more slowly and cooperation achieves more than force; nothing about it calls for worry. Personal results are read from your Moon sign, with the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Moon considered supportive. The live position is on the Sun transit page.
Common misreadings
- "Debilitated means bad." It means the Sun works in an unfamiliar mode. Many capable people have it, and cancellation is common.
- Mixing Western and Vedic Libra. See Vedic vs Western sun sign.
- Skipping the rest of the chart. Lagna, conjunctions, aspects, navamsa and the running dasha change everything.
Compare Sun in Aries, its exaltation, and Sun in Scorpio.
