Mercury in the 11th house places the planet of intellect, speech and commerce in the house of gains, income, friends and hopes fulfilled. Tradition reads it as earning through the mind: trade, communication, advice, networks and ideas that other people will pay for, often with more than one source of income.

What Mercury brings to the house of gains
The 11th house, labha bhava, shows what comes in: income, profit, rewards, elder siblings, friends, patrons and the circles a person moves in. Its karaka is Jupiter. Mercury is the graha of exchange, the planet that connects buyer and seller, idea and audience.
- Many streams. Mercury is dual and restless, so gains here often arrive from several directions: a main job plus consulting, writing, teaching or a small business on the side.
- Income from information. Commission, brokerage, trading, media, marketing, software, tutoring and agency work are typical Mercury channels of profit.
- Friends as a resource. Mercury is a karaka of friends and peers, and the 11th is the house of friendships. The two reinforce each other: this person tends to know many people, keep in touch easily and hear of opportunities first.
- Elder siblings. The 11th also describes elder brothers and sisters. Mercury here is often read as a clever, communicative elder sibling or a relationship built on shared interests.
The 11th is an upachaya house, one whose results grow with time and effort. Malefics are classically welcome in the upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11), but the 11th is special: nearly every planet is read as doing well here, benefics included. Mercury has no digbala question in the 11th (its digbala is in the 1st) and is not the house's karaka.
How the sign changes it
- Leo lagna: the 11th is Gemini, Mercury's own sign, and Mercury rules the 2nd and 11th. The lord of income sits in the house of income together with the lordship of savings, a classic ingredient of dhana yoga.
- Scorpio lagna: the 11th is Virgo, where Mercury is exalted, in own sign and moolatrikona from 15 to 20 degrees. It rules the 8th and 11th here, so gains may come through research, insurance, joint resources or unexpected sources.
- Taurus lagna: the 11th is Pisces, Mercury's debilitation, while Mercury rules the 2nd and 5th. The wealth and intelligence lords are in the house of gains but weak by sign; neecha-bhanga, for instance through a strong Jupiter, is worth checking.
For Virgo lagna the 11th is Cancer, the Moon's sign, where Mercury is with a planet it counts as an enemy. Taurus (for Cancer lagna), Leo (for Libra lagna) and Libra (for Sagittarius lagna) are friendly signs of Venus and the Sun.
The aspect on the 5th house
From the 11th, Mercury's one full aspect (drishti) falls on the 5th house: intelligence, study, creativity, children, advice and speculation. This is a fitting link, since the 5th is the house of buddhi and Mercury the planet named after it. The aspect often shows a lively mind, an interest in puzzles, games or markets, and learning that later turns into income. It can also describe children who are bright and talkative. When Mercury is afflicted, it may point to a mind that jumps between too many plans.
The 11th lord and Mercury's lordship
The lord of your 11th sign carries the other half of the result: Mercury in Aquarius or Capricorn depends on Saturn, Mercury in Aries on Mars. Then read Mercury's own lordship.
- Virgo lagna: Mercury, the lagnesh and 10th lord, sits in Cancer. Self and career both point toward gains and networks, even though the sign is not a comfortable one.
- Sagittarius lagna: Mercury rules the 7th and 10th and sits in Libra, a friend's sign. Income tends to come through partners, clients and professional reputation.
- Gemini lagna: Mercury, lagna lord and 4th lord, sits in Aries. The person tends to pursue gains actively, and property or home-based work can contribute.
In the Mercury dasha
The placement shows most clearly in the Mercury mahadasha, in Mercury's antardasha, and in the dasha of the 11th lord. These periods often bring new income sources, a widening circle, recognition from peers, or the fulfilment of a long-held plan. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives the principles relied on here: the 11th as the house of gains, the upachaya houses, lordship and dhana yoga, and Mercury's significations of trade and friendship. The classical texts broadly agree that planets in the 11th tend to deliver their results as gains, and traditional authors describe Mercury there with wealth, learning and many friends. These are descriptions of an unafflicted Mercury; its company still changes the tone.
Common misreadings
- Treating it as guaranteed wealth. The 11th shows the capacity for gains; the 2nd shows what is kept, and the dasha shows when.
- Ignoring the 5th house aspect. Much of this Mercury's value comes from how it feeds study and ideas.
- Skipping the lagna. An exalted 8th and 11th lord (Scorpio) and a debilitated 2nd and 5th lord (Taurus) are not the same placement.
- Reading a Moon-sign chart as the birth chart. Counting from the Moon is a supplementary view, not a replacement for the lagna.
