The 11th house in Vedic astrology is the house of gains: income, profits, elder siblings, friends, social networks and the fulfilment of wishes. Classically called labha (gain) or aya (income) bhava, its karaka is Jupiter, and it is an upachaya house, one whose results grow with time and effort.
If the 10th house is what you do, the 11th is what comes back. It is the harvest after the work, which is why it sits right after the house of karma.
What the 11th house governs
- Gains and income: salary, profit, returns on effort, rewards and recognition that bring something tangible.
- Elder siblings: older brothers and sisters, and seniors who act like them.
- Friends and networks: circles, associations, communities, well-wishers.
- Hopes and wishes: the fulfilment of desires, which is why some texts simply call it the house of attainment.
- Ease of earning: whether gains arrive steadily, suddenly or through others.
In the natural zodiac, the eleventh sign is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn, whose moolatrikona lies there. The kalapurusha gives it the calves (shanks). Aquarius is a sign of community and shared purpose, a fitting image for a house of friends and networks. The 11th belongs to the kama (desire) group with the 3rd and 7th: what we wish for, and the people we share it with.
Why the 11th is generous
The 11th is an upachaya house (3, 6, 10, 11). In these houses the natural malefics, Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu and Ketu, are traditionally counted as doing well, because they bring persistence and appetite to a house that rewards both. Phaladeepika describes almost every planet as favourable in the 11th. Benefics here tend to give gains through pleasant means; malefics, gains through effort, competition or bold moves.
That generosity has a boundary. The 11th shows what comes in, not whether it stays. The 2nd house shows what is kept, and the 12th what goes out. A balanced reading holds all three together.
A note on badhaka
Some astrologers, following later texts, treat the 11th lord as the badhakesh (lord of obstruction) for movable-sign lagnas: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. For fixed lagnas the badhaka house is the 9th, and for dual lagnas the 7th. It is an idea mostly used in Kerala-style prashna and it is applied in different ways; in Parashari practice the 11th lord is still first of all the lord of gains. It is mentioned here so that readers who meet the term are not unsettled by it.
How to read the 11th house, step by step
- The sign on the 11th. With whole-sign houses, it is the eleventh sign from the lagna. Earth signs suggest gains through steady, practical means; fire signs through initiative; air through ideas and contacts; water through care and relationships.
- The 11th lord. Where it sits shows the source of gains. In the 10th, through career; in the 5th, through intelligence, study or creative work; in the 9th, through fortune, teachers or long journeys; in the 2nd, gains that turn into savings.
- Planets in the 11th. Jupiter here is classically expansive and friendly; Saturn gives slow, lasting gains; Mars, gains through courage or property; Mercury, through trade and communication; Rahu, often through unusual or large networks.
- Aspects. Planets in the 5th aspect the 11th directly. Jupiter reaches it from the 3rd (its 9th aspect) and from the 7th (its 5th aspect); Saturn from the 9th and the 2nd; Mars from the 8th and the 4th.
- The karaka. Judge Jupiter's strength and dignity.
- Links to other lords. Classical dhana yogas come from connections between the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th. A link between the 11th and 2nd lords is a traditional sign of earning that is kept.
- Timing and the Moon. The dasha of the 11th lord or of planets in the 11th often brings gains or new friendships. Count the 11th from the Moon as well; Jupiter's transit over the 11th from the Moon is traditionally one of its most welcome.
Some astrologers also use ashtakavarga, and a common rule of thumb is that the 11th should hold more points than the 12th, meaning income ahead of expense.
Common misreadings
The first is reading the 11th as wealth by itself. Income without savings or with heavy expense is a different story, so the 2nd and 12th are always consulted.
The second is expecting every wish to be granted. The 11th shows the capacity to attain; timing comes from the dasha, and the nature of the wish from the rest of the chart.
The third is forgetting the people. The 11th is also friendship and elder siblings, and a busy 11th house can show a life rich in community as much as in money.
As with every house, one factor never decides a chart; the whole kundli is read together.
A worked example, in general terms
Take a Cancer lagna. The 11th is Taurus, ruled by Venus, which also rules the 4th. Venus as lord of both suggests gains linked with home, comforts, vehicles, art or beauty. If Venus sits in the 10th in Aries, those gains may come through public or professional work. If Saturn is in the 11th, the income tends to build slowly and last, and older friends or elder siblings may play a part.
Because Cancer is a movable lagna, some astrologers would also note Venus as badhakesh, and then weigh that against its role as the lord of the 4th and 11th.
