Third House in Astrology: Courage, Siblings and Skills

The third house, called sahaja (the co-born) or parakrama (valour), governs younger siblings, courage, self-effort, practical skills, communication and short journeys. It is the house of what you do with your own hands and will, and it tends to grow stronger as life goes on.

What the third house governs

Its two classical names already give the core. Sahaja means born together, so the house describes younger brothers and sisters and, by extension, cousins, neighbours and close peers. Parakrama means valour, the willingness to act, persist and take a risk.

The texts and later practice add:

• initiative, enterprise and the energy to start things without waiting for permission;
• skills of the hands and voice: writing, crafts, music, sport, drawing, typing, performance;
• messages, media, short-form communication and contracts in the small sense;
• short journeys and daily movement;
• the arms, shoulders and right ear in the Kalapurusha body map;
• hobbies and the things you practise for their own sake.

The 3rd is a kama house (3, 7, 11), the first of the houses of desire: it shows what you want enough to go after.

Karaka and group

Mars is the natural karaka of the third house, the planet of courage and younger brothers. Many astrologers also weigh Mercury for writing, commerce and communication, since Mercury rules Gemini, the third sign of the natural zodiac.

The 3rd is an upachaya house (3, 6, 10, 11), one of the houses that improve with time and effort, and an apoklima (cadent) house. Upachaya houses are where natural malefics often behave well: a Mars, Saturn, Sun or Rahu placed here can turn restlessness into daring and persistence. That is why an astrologer may look at a strong third house with malefics in it and call it an asset, not a problem.

There is also a classical link with longevity: the 3rd is the eighth from the 8th, so it is one of the two houses of life span used in old calculations. This is technical background only.

Reading the third house step by step

1. The sign on the 3rd. A fire sign here tends to show boldness; an air sign, communication and networks; an earth sign, steady practical skill; a water sign, courage that is protective and emotional.
2. The third lord. Follow it. In the 10th, skills and self-effort become a profession. In the 11th, initiative brings gains and useful connections. In the 9th, the courage to follow one's own beliefs, and sometimes travel for learning. In the 12th, effort spent abroad or behind the scenes. In the 6th, the drive to compete and work hard.
3. Planets in the 3rd. Mars gives daring; Saturn gives stamina and a slow-building discipline; Mercury gives writing, trade and wit; Venus artistic skill; the Moon a sensitive and changeable relationship with siblings; Jupiter is classically less comfortable here, being a gentle planet in a house of fight, but it can make one principled in effort.
4. Aspects. Saturn aspects the 3rd from the 1st, Mars from the 8th and 12th, Jupiter from the 7th and 11th. The planet in the 9th aspects it directly.
5. The karaka. A strong Mars supports courage and sibling support even when the 3rd is mixed.
6. The dasha. The dasha of the third lord often brings new projects, writing, travel, sport or a new skill, and more involvement with siblings.
7. From the Moon. Count the 3rd from the Moon too. Transits through the 3rd from the Moon are traditionally among the favourable ones, especially for Saturn and Mars.

Divisional chart

The drekkana (D3), a varga that divides each sign into three, is the classical chart for siblings and courage. Astrologers read the third house and its lord in D1 first, and then the D3 to confirm.

Common misreadings

• "The 3rd is only siblings." Siblings are one theme; effort and skill are just as central. Many people with no younger siblings have very active third houses expressed through work and hobbies.
• "A malefic in the 3rd hurts siblings." Tradition does sometimes read a heavy malefic in the 3rd as a more distant or demanding sibling relationship, but the same placement gives the native strength. Relationships are judged from the whole chart.
• "Short journeys are only travel." In modern life the 3rd shows commuting, daily errands, calls and messages: the small movements of a day.

General examples

A chart with Mars strong in the 3rd and the third lord in the 10th is traditionally read as someone who builds a career from personal initiative: a self-starter, a craftsperson, an athlete or someone in media. A chart with a quiet 3rd and its lord in the 12th often describes a person whose courage is inward, a patient, private kind of effort. Both are read against the lagna, the running dasha and the rest of the chart; one house never decides a life.
