On this page

Aquarius here is Kumbha of the sidereal zodiac, set by the Lahiri ayanamsa and about 24 degrees behind the tropical Aquarius used in Western sun-sign columns. For many people, then, a Western "Mars in Aquarius" is Mars in Capricorn in their kundli. In sidereal Aquarius Mars sits in Saturn's air sign on neutral terms, and it is read as energy that works for a group, a system or an idea: inventive, reforming and persistent, more interested in the cause than in personal glory.

The warrior with a water pot

Aquarius is an air sign, fixed (sthira), odd and masculine, the 11th sign of the kalapurusha, associated with the calves. Its symbol is a man carrying a water pot: distributing, serving and connecting. It is the sign of networks, gains, elder siblings and collective aims. Mars in such a sign fights less for itself and more for a team, a principle or a community.

What tradition tends to see:

  • Energy for causes. Social work, unions, reform movements, science and technology draw this Mars.
  • Inventiveness. Mars's engineering side meets Aquarius's interest in systems; new methods and machines appeal.
  • Fixed opinions. Aquarius is a fixed sign, and Mars here can hold a position long after others have moved on.
  • Friends and networks. As the natural 11th sign, it links effort with friends, elder siblings and gains from groups.
  • Cool detachment. Anger may be expressed as distance rather than heat.

Dignity: neutral, with a one-sided coolness

In Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's natural friendships, Mars counts Saturn as neutral, but Saturn counts Mars as an enemy. So Aquarius is a neutral sign for Mars across all 30 degrees, with no special dignity and no Mahapurusha yoga. The same one-sided relation appears in Capricorn, where Mars is exalted; in Aquarius, without exaltation to lift it, Saturn's condition becomes a bigger factor. A well-placed Saturn helps this Mars work patiently within structures; a strained Saturn can make it feel blocked or frustrated.

Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada

  • Dhanishta, padas 3 and 4 (0°–6°40′, lord Mars): Mars's own nakshatra. Rhythm, music, teamwork and resourcefulness, with more drive than the rest of the sign.
  • Shatabhisha, all four padas (6°40′–20°, lord Rahu): the hundred healers. Research, medicine, technology and solitary work; Rahu's lordship adds unconventional methods.
  • Purva Bhadrapada, padas 1 to 3 (20°–30°, lord Jupiter): intensity and idealism. Jupiter, a friend of Mars, lends conviction; there can be a fiery, uncompromising streak.

Aspects from Aquarius

From Aquarius, Mars aspects Taurus with its 4th drishti, Leo with its 7th and Virgo with its 8th. The 7th aspect lands on the Sun's sign, a friend's sign for Mars, and the 4th on Taurus, often the house of home or money depending on the lagna.

Which house for your lagna

Aquarius is the natural 11th house, so the classical parallel is Mars in the 11th house: gains through effort, friends, elder siblings and fulfilment of desires. In your chart:

  • Taurus lagna: Aquarius is the 10th, where Mars has digbala; Mars rules the 7th and 12th. See Mars in the 10th house.
  • Leo lagna: Aquarius is the 7th, a kendra; the yogakaraka lord of the 4th and 9th sits in the house of partners. See Mars in the 7th house.
  • Aries lagna: the lagna lord in the 11th, putting personal drive into gains and networks.
  • Cancer lagna: the yogakaraka, lord of the 5th and 10th, falls in the 8th house of research and sudden change.
  • Scorpio lagna: the lagna lord sits in the 4th, the house of home and property.

The navamsa, aspects, conjunctions and dasha all adjust these readings.

Manglik: the house decides

Aquarius as a sign has no bearing on Manglik status; the house of Mars from the lagna, and often from the Moon and Venus, does. Mars in Aquarius is in a listed house for Aquarius lagna (1st), Capricorn lagna (2nd), Scorpio lagna (4th), Leo lagna (7th), Cancer lagna (8th) and Pisces lagna (12th). The tradition gives cancellations too; the Manglik dosha guide explains them.

Mars transiting Aquarius

Mars's typical stay in Aquarius is about 39 days, the shortest median stay of any sign in this site's data. A retrograde loop can still stretch it to about six months. The current and next dates are listed above; the Mars transit page follows it live. In gochar, read the transit for the house Aquarius occupies from your Moon: effort in that area, often through groups or systems, most favourable in the 3rd, 6th or 11th from the Moon.

Misreadings

  • Assuming Saturn's sign means conflict. The enmity is Saturn's view, not Mars's, and the sign is neutral for Mars.
  • Reading detachment as coldness. Much of this Mars's energy is spent quietly for others.
  • Using the tropical sign. See Vedic vs Western sun signs.
