In matching, Purva Bhadrapada contributes a manushya gana, the male lion yoni and the Adi nadi, and its Moon sign is Aquarius for the first three padas and Pisces for the fourth. The table above shows its usual totals peaking at 30.5 as the groom and 31.5 as the bride, while the full range of cells runs from 8.5 to 33 and from 7.5 to 33.
The gap between "usual" and "full" is mostly the fourth pada at work. This note explains it alongside the other rules our kundli matching engine applies.
What the nakshatra decides
Purva Bhadrapada, linked with Aja Ekapada, is ruled by Jupiter. It fixes:
- Gana (6): manushya.
- Yoni (4): lion, male. Dhanishta is the lioness. The elephant of Bharani and Revati is the sworn enemy.
- Nadi (8): Adi.
- Tara (3): from its position.
Three padas in Aquarius, one in Pisces
Varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot come from the Moon sign. For padas 1 to 3 that is Aquarius, ruled by Saturn; for pada 4 it is Pisces, ruled by Jupiter. Unlike Dhanishta's two Saturn signs, this crossing changes the sign lord, so graha maitri can move along with bhakoot, varna and vashya.
With three padas in Aquarius, the usual score is the Aquarius reading. The fourth pada can pull a cell either way. Rohini, wholly in Taurus, reads 30.5 usual with a Purva Bhadrapada groom, but the range goes down to 27, and that lower end belongs to the Pisces pada. Purva Ashadha works the other way: 28.5 usual, with the cell able to rise to 31.5 depending on the exact positions, since Purva Ashadha has its own small vashya shift at 15° of Sagittarius.
When the partner also straddles, ranges widen: Dhanishta reads 18–28.5 with a Purva Bhadrapada groom.
Reading the row
As the groom, 8 usual scores are below 18, 12 in the 18–24.5 band, 7 in 25–32, none above. As the bride: 7, 11, 9, none above. The leaders are Rohini (30.5 and 31.5), Mrigashira (29.5 and 31.5), Purva Ashadha (28.5 and 29.5), Dhanishta (28.5 both ways) and Purva Bhadrapada with itself (28).
Rohini tops the list even though it falls on a vadha tara from Purva Bhadrapada, which shows how lightly tara, at 1.5 a side, weighs against the rest. Purva Ashadha does something similar from a pratyari tara.
A Purva Bhadrapada bride often scores a little more than a groom would. The gana table gives a manushya bride with a deva groom the full 6, but a manushya groom with a deva bride only 5. Varna, read from the groom's side, adds further small differences.
The lowest usual scores for a Purva Bhadrapada groom are Jyeshtha at 11, Ashlesha at 11.5 and Hasta at 13.5. Jyeshtha and Ashlesha are rakshasa, which zeroes gana, and both fall on Purva Bhadrapada's vipat tara; Jyeshtha and Hasta share its nadi.
Lion, elephant and the rakshasa nine
Lion and elephant are sworn enemies, so Bharani and Revati give 0 of 4 for yoni. Dhanishta, the lioness, gives the full 4, but Dhanishta is rakshasa, so gana there is 0.
That is the general pattern for gana: manushya with rakshasa is 0 from both sides, which affects Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. Regional manuals differ on whether other harmonies can offset this; we show the score as the table gives it.
From Purva Bhadrapada, tara is vipat for Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati, pratyari for Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha, and vadha for Rohini, Hasta and Shravana. Some traditions count tara only from the bride.
Nadi: Adi partners and exceptions
Purva Bhadrapada shares the Adi nadi with Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula and Shatabhisha, and nadi scores 0 with each. With Shatabhisha, the "same Moon sign, different nakshatras" exception can apply when the Purva Bhadrapada Moon is in Aquarius. With the other seven, none can.
Purva Bhadrapada with Purva Bhadrapada usually scores 28. If one Moon is in Aquarius and the other in Pisces, the adjacent signs lose bhakoot and the total can fall to 16.5, but two exceptions come into play for nadi: different padas, and the same nakshatra in different Moon signs. Texts describe the exceptions; astrologers differ on their force. The nadi dosha explainer covers this without fear-mongering.
Past the numbers
Even a score in the thirties leaves most of the question open. Astrologers go on to manglik status, the seventh house, the navamsa and the dasha periods, and in the South the porutham systems reach their own judgements. The rest of the grid is on the nakshatra compatibility chart, and the best-scoring partner has its own page at Rohini.
