Punarvasu brings a deva gana, a cat yoni and the Adi nadi to gun milan, and its Moon sign is Gemini in the first three padas and Cancer in the fourth. In our table Punarvasu scores from 7 to 34 across the 27 nakshatras in either role, but its usual totals top out at 31.5, and a good number of its cells are ranges.
All figures come from the engine behind our kundli matching. This page explains how to read the Punarvasu row, with particular care for those ranges.
Punarvasu's ingredients
Punarvasu, the quiver of arrows, is ruled by Jupiter and presided over by Aditi. Its matching features:
- Gana: deva. It never scores 0 on gana. Against rakshasa it takes 1.
- Yoni: cat (female). The rat is its sworn enemy, the yoni of Magha and Purva Phalguni. Ashlesha is the male cat.
- Nadi: Adi.
- Moon sign: Gemini (padas 1–3) or Cancer (pada 4).
Gemini or Cancer: why it matters here
Three quarters of Punarvasu lie in Gemini, so the usual figure in each cell is the Gemini one. A Moon in the fourth pada falls in Cancer, ruled by the Moon rather than Mercury, and the sign-based kootas (varna, vashya, graha maitri, bhakoot) then read differently. The result can move either way. Swati, for instance, is usually 27 but can reach 28; Mrigashira, which straddles two signs as well, is usually 31.5 but can drop to 19 or 18. The 34 at the top of Punarvasu's full range is the upper end of such a range, not a usual score. A kundli will show which pada your Moon is in.
What the Punarvasu row shows
As the groom Punarvasu has 5 low pairings, 12 average and 10 good; as the bride, 5 low, 13 average and 9 good. None of the usual scores reach the above-32 band, but about a third land in the good band.
Mrigashira heads the list at 31.5 in both directions, helped by a deva–deva gana and different nadis, even though Punarvasu falls on a vipat tara counted from Mrigashira. Punarvasu with itself usually scores 28. Swati, Purva Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada each reach 27.
The lowest usual score with a Punarvasu groom is Jyeshtha at 7, followed by Shatabhisha at 13 and Mula at 14. All three are rakshasa, so gana gives only 1, and all three share Punarvasu's Adi nadi.
Gana, yoni and tara
As a deva nakshatra, Punarvasu scores 6 on gana with deva partners and with manushya brides when Punarvasu is the groom, 5 when the manushya partner is the groom, and 1 with rakshasa partners. It never falls to 0.
On yoni, the cat and rat are sworn enemies, so Magha and Purva Phalguni score 0 of 4. Ashlesha, the other cat, gives the full 4.
Counting from Punarvasu, the unfavourable taras fall on Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati (vipat), Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha (pratyari), and Rohini, Hasta and Shravana (vadha). Purva Ashadha still reaches 27 despite this, a reminder that tara is only 3 of the 36 points.
Nadi: Adi partners and their exceptions
Punarvasu shares the Adi nadi with Ashwini, Ardra, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. Each pairing scores 0 of 8 on nadi. The exceptions available:
- Ardra, when the Punarvasu Moon is in Gemini: same sign, different nakshatras.
- Punarvasu with Punarvasu: different Moon signs, or different padas.
For the other seven, no standard exception can apply. Our tool lists exceptions but does not change the score, because schools of astrology differ on how much they offset. The nadi dosha guide explains the reasoning.
A score is not the whole match
Punarvasu's row is mostly in the middle and upper bands, but even a 31.5 is only eight traditional checks agreeing. A complete reading also covers manglik status, the seventh house, the navamsa and the dasha sequence, and South Indian porutham systems can rank Punarvasu's partners differently. The people themselves, and how they talk to each other, remain the heart of it. Compare with Ardra or Pushya, or view the nakshatra compatibility chart.
