An Uttara Bhadrapada-born person's gun milan is shaped by a manushya gana, the cow yoni and the Madhya nadi, with every Moon in Pisces. In the table above, its best pairing is with the very next nakshatra, Revati, at 33 or 34, and its usual scores with the rest run from 10.5 up to the high twenties.
Uttara Bhadrapada sits wholly in one sign, so it adds no ranges of its own. The ranges in its row belong to partners, and our kundli matching engine resolves them from the exact Moon degrees.
Uttara Bhadrapada's contribution
Uttara Bhadrapada, the nakshatra of Ahir Budhnya, the serpent of the deep, is ruled by Saturn and lies in Pisces, a Jupiter sign. For the kootas:
- Gana (6): manushya.
- Yoni (4): cow, female. Uttara Phalguni is the bull. The tiger of Chitra and Vishakha is the sworn enemy.
- Nadi (8): Madhya.
- Tara (3): its position in the count.
Pisces supplies varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot, 15 points in all.
The row in numbers
As the groom, 7 usual scores fall below 18, 10 in 18–24.5, 9 in 25–32 and 1 above 32. As the bride: 8, 10, 8 and 1. Counting the far ends of every range, the cells stretch from 3.5 to 33 as the groom and from 2.5 to 34 as the bride; those extreme lows sit at the edge of a partner's range rather than in its usual figure.
Revati is the standout, and a neat illustration of how gana is scored. Both Moons are in Pisces, and the nadis differ. With Uttara Bhadrapada as the groom the total is 33; with Uttara Bhadrapada as the bride it is 34. The extra point is gana: the table gives a manushya groom with a deva bride 5, but a deva groom with a manushya bride the full 6.
Next come Uttara Ashadha, 29.5 as groom and 28.5 as bride, and Shravana, 29.5 either way. Both sit on a pratyari tara from Uttara Bhadrapada, which again shows how little tara moves a total. Uttara Bhadrapada with itself scores 28, and Uttara Phalguni, the matching bull, 28.5 as groom and 27.5 as bride.
The ranges from Capricorn and Sagittarius
Several of the leading partners straddle signs. Uttara Ashadha's first pada is in Sagittarius and the rest in Capricorn, so its cell reads 29.5–31.5 with Uttara Bhadrapada as the groom. The higher end belongs to that first pada, helped by the fact that Sagittarius and Pisces share Jupiter as their lord. Shravana does not change sign, but it holds the 15° line where Capricorn's vashya class changes, which is why its cell reads 28.5–29.5. Uttara Phalguni crosses from Leo into Virgo, giving 26.5–28.5.
Cow, tiger and gana
Cow and tiger are sworn enemies, so Chitra and Vishakha give 0 of 4 for yoni. Both are also rakshasa, which scores 0 for gana against a manushya nakshatra, and Chitra shares the Madhya nadi and falls on a vadha tara as well. That is why Chitra, at 10.5, is the lowest usual score for an Uttara Bhadrapada groom, with Vishakha at 13 and Shatabhisha at 15.
The full rakshasa list, each scoring 0 on gana here, is Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. Some manuals soften a gana mismatch under other favourable conditions.
From Uttara Bhadrapada, tara is vipat for Ashwini, Magha and Mula, pratyari for Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha, and vadha for Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta. We count both directions at 1.5 each; some schools count only from the bride.
The Madhya nadi
Uttara Bhadrapada shares the Madhya nadi with Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha and Dhanishta. With each, nadi scores 0 of 8, and none of the standard exceptions can apply, because none of them is in Pisces. With itself, the "different padas" exception can apply.
Tradition gives nadi 8 points, the heaviest koota, and also names exceptions; astrologers disagree on how much they relieve it. Our nadi dosha guide explains the rule plainly, and the 36 guna guide shows how all eight parts add up.
The rest of the picture
Gun milan is one traditional screen. A careful match also studies manglik status, the seventh house, the navamsa and the running dashas, and South Indian porutham methods read the same pair differently. For every other row, open the nakshatra compatibility chart, or go to Revati, its strongest partner.
