Pushya contributes a deva gana, a sheep yoni and the Madhya nadi to gun milan, with Cancer as the Moon sign in every pada. As the groom, Pushya scores between 5.5 and 34 across the 27 nakshatras; as the bride, between 4.5 and 34, with the usual totals peaking at 30.5 and 29.5 respectively.
Each figure in the table above is computed by the code behind our kundli matching. What follows is a guide to the patterns in Pushya's row.
How Pushya enters the match
Pushya is ruled by Saturn, with Brihaspati as its deity, and lies wholly in Cancer, the Moon's own sign. For the eight kootas:
- Gana: deva. No gana score of 0 with anyone; rakshasa partners give 1.
- Yoni: sheep (male). Its enemy is the monkey, carried by Purva Ashadha and Shravana. Krittika is the female sheep.
- Nadi: Madhya.
- Moon sign: Cancer throughout. Varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot are always taken from Cancer.
As with every single-sign nakshatra, any range in Pushya's row comes from the partner, when that partner's nakshatra crosses a sign line.
Pushya's row, band by band
With Pushya as the groom there are 7 low pairings, 10 average and 10 good. With Pushya as the bride there are 9 low, 8 average and 10 good. Neither row has a usual score above 32, though the top of some ranges goes higher. The bride row has a heavier low end, a reminder that gana and varna are not symmetric between groom and bride.
Ashwini leads at 30.5 (Pushya groom) and 29.5 (Pushya bride). Both are deva, their nadis differ, and the pair survives a vipat tara counted from Pushya. Ashlesha, the next nakshatra in the sky, follows at 29 in both roles. Both Moons share Cancer, which fills the sign-based kootas, and although Ashlesha's rakshasa gana gives only 1 on that koota, the Antya nadi differs from Pushya's Madhya. Pushya with itself scores 28, as do Uttara Phalguni and Hasta with a Pushya groom.
The lowest usual totals with a Pushya groom are Chitra (13), Purva Ashadha (13.5) and Dhanishta (14). All three share the Madhya nadi. Chitra and Dhanishta are also rakshasa and sit on a vadha tara from Pushya; Purva Ashadha carries the monkey yoni.
Yoni and gana notes
Sheep and monkey form one of the sworn-enemy pairs, so Pushya with Purva Ashadha or Shravana scores 0 of 4 on yoni. With Krittika, the other sheep, yoni gives 4.
Pushya's deva gana keeps it out of the harshest outcomes. Deva with deva, or a deva groom with a manushya bride, scores 6; a manushya groom with a Pushya bride scores 5; rakshasa partners score 1.
Counting tara from Pushya, the unfavourable ones are Ashwini, Magha and Mula (vipat), Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha (pratyari), and Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta (vadha). Some traditions count tara only from the bride's nakshatra, which would change a few cells by 1.5.
Nadi: the Madhya group
The Madhya nadi joins Pushya with Bharani, Mrigashira, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta and Uttara Bhadrapada. With each of them, nadi is 0 of 8, and none of the standard exceptions can apply: none shares Pushya's nakshatra, and none has its Moon in Cancer. Pushya with Pushya is the one case with an exception, when the padas differ.
Tradition treats a shared nadi as a point for careful review, not a ban, and some regional customs apply it differently. Our tool reports exceptions but leaves the score as computed. For the full reasoning, read our nadi dosha guide.
Looking at the whole chart
Pushya is often called the most auspicious nakshatra for beginnings, but its gun milan row is ordinary in shape, and that is fine. A matching score is one screen. A complete reading also looks at manglik status, the seventh house, the navamsa and the dashas, and South Indian porutham matching weighs Pushya's partners in its own way. Most of all, it is two people learning whether they understand each other. Compare with Ashlesha, or browse the nakshatra compatibility chart.
