Hasta's matching rests on a deva gana, a female buffalo yoni, Adi nadi and a Moon that stays in Virgo through all four padas. In the table above its full scores run from 9 to 33 with Hasta as groom and from 8.5 to 32 with Hasta as bride, and with Hasta as groom more of its usual totals fall in the good band than in any other.
That makes Hasta one of the easier stars to match on paper. Its weak spots are few but sharp, and they come from a single yoni clash that lines up with nadi.
Hasta's contribution to the eight kootas
Hasta is ruled by the Moon, with Savitr, the Sun as the giver of life, as its deity, and an open hand as its symbol. The parts that matching uses:
- Deva gana. Gana never scores 0 for Hasta. With another deva star it is 6; with a manushya star it is 6 when Hasta is the groom and 5 when Hasta is the bride; with a rakshasa star it is 1 either way.
- Buffalo yoni (female), whose male counterpart is Swati.
- Adi nadi.
- Virgo Moon, all padas, ruled by Mercury, which settles varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot.
Since Hasta stays in one sign, its own side of the table never splits. The ranges in its row come from partners that straddle two signs, such as Mrigashira (usual 33, range 25–33 with Hasta as groom) and Chitra (usual 28, range 21–28).
The shape of the row
As groom, Hasta's usual totals fall 6 below 18, 9 from 18 to 24½, 11 from 25 to 32 and 1 above 32. As bride they fall 6, 11, 10 and 0. The single excellent cell is Mrigashira with Hasta as groom; as bride the same pairing reaches 32, just inside the good band.
The rest of the top group is close together. As groom: Hasta with itself 28, Chitra 28, Swati 27.5, Pushya 27. As bride: Pushya 28, Hasta 28, Chitra 28 and Revati 27.5.
The horse problem
In the yoni scheme the buffalo and the horse are sworn enemies, and the horse nakshatras are Ashwini and Shatabhisha. With either one, yoni scores 0 of 4. Both of them are also Adi nadi, the same as Hasta, so nadi adds another 0 of 8. That is why the lowest usual scores with Hasta as groom are Ashwini at 9 and Shatabhisha at 9.5, followed by Jyeshtha at 13, which shares the nadi as well.
These three are the clearest example in Hasta's row of kootas stacking up. They are still one screen's verdict on the Moon's position; they say nothing about the character of the two people.
Tara from Hasta
Counting from Hasta, vipat falls on Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha, pratyari on Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada, and vadha on Ashwini, Magha and Mula. Swati and Pushya sit near the top of Hasta's table anyway, because tara's 3 points are split across the two directions and one unfavourable count only takes away 1.5. Some traditions count tara from the bride alone, and South Indian porutham systems give star relations their own weighting.
Nadi: who shares Adi with Hasta
The Adi group is Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada. With each, the nadi koota is 0, what texts call nadi dosha. For seven of those partners none of the exceptions our engine checks can apply.
Two can. Uttara Phalguni has three padas in Virgo, and when that is where its Moon falls, Hasta and Uttara Phalguni share a sign under different stars, a recognised exception. And two Hasta Moons in different padas qualify under the same-nakshatra rule. The engine notes both and changes neither score. Opinion differs on how much any exception offsets the point, and a few regional customs apply nadi more loosely for some stars.
What a total cannot tell you
Hasta is a star of skill and craft, and it is natural to want the numbers to be neat. They are only the Moon's portion of compatibility. Kundli matching also checks manglik placement, the 7th house and its lord, the navamsa and the dasha periods ahead. Browse every other row on the nakshatra compatibility chart.
