For someone with the Moon in Purva Ashadha, gun milan turns on a manushya gana, the monkey yoni, the Madhya nadi and a Moon sign of Sagittarius. The table above puts Purva Ashadha's usual totals between 11.5 and 30.5 as the groom and up to 32.5 as the bride, and most of its cells carry a small range for a reason that is particular to this nakshatra.
That reason is worth a paragraph, because it is easy to mistake for an error. Everything else follows the same rules our kundli matching engine applies to every pair.
What Purva Ashadha contributes
Purva Ashadha lies wholly in Sagittarius, between 13°20′ and 26°40′. Its lord is Venus; the sign lord is Jupiter. The nakshatra fixes four kootas:
- Tara (3), from its position in the count of 27.
- Yoni (4): monkey, male. Shravana is the other monkey. The sworn enemy is the sheep of Krittika and Pushya.
- Gana (6): manushya, the human temperament.
- Nadi (8): Madhya.
Varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot come from Sagittarius.
The 15° line inside Purva Ashadha
Vashya, worth 2 points, sorts signs into classes such as human, four-footed and watery. Sagittarius is not one class all the way through: its first half is counted as human and its second half as four-footed, and the change comes at 15°. That line runs through Purva Ashadha's first pada.
So a Purva Ashadha Moon between 13°20′ and 15° is read as human for vashya, while the rest of the nakshatra, the larger part, is read as four-footed. With most partners the difference is a point or less, which is why so many cells look like Revati 30–30.5 or Ashwini 26–27. The "usual" figure is the one that holds over most of the arc. If your Moon is close to 15° of Sagittarius, the exact matching will tell you which side you are on. Wider ranges, such as Uttara Phalguni's 25–29.5, add the partner's own sign change on top.
Reading the Purva Ashadha row
As the groom, 8 usual scores are below 18, 8 are in the 18–24.5 band, 11 reach 25–32, and none go above 32. As the bride the pattern moves up: 6, 10, 10 and 1 above 32. The full spread of cells stretches from 8 to 35 as the groom and 7 to 35 as the bride once every edge of every range is counted.
Revati leads: 30.5 with a Purva Ashadha groom, 32.5 with a Purva Ashadha bride, the one excellent result in the row. Purva Bhadrapada follows at 29.5 and 28.5, then Uttara Phalguni at 28.5 and 27.5, and Ashwini at 27 and 28. Purva Ashadha with itself is 28 usual.
Part of the tilt toward the bride's side is gana. The table gives a manushya groom with a deva bride 5 points, but a deva groom with a manushya bride the full 6, so a Purva Ashadha bride picks up a point with every deva groom. Varna, read from the groom's side, adds its own small differences.
Monkey, sheep and gana
Monkey and sheep are sworn enemies, so Krittika and Pushya give 0 of 4 for yoni. Shravana, the other monkey, gives the full 4, although Shravana sits on Purva Ashadha's vipat tara.
On gana, manushya meeting rakshasa scores 0 from either side. That applies with Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha. It is why the weakest usual scores for a Purva Ashadha groom are Pushya at 11.5, Chitra at 12 and Krittika at 14.5: Chitra combines the rakshasa gana with a shared nadi, Krittika combines it with the enemy yoni, and Pushya brings enemy yoni, shared nadi and a vadha tara together.
Counted from Purva Ashadha, Rohini, Hasta and Shravana fall on vipat, Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha on pratyari, and Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada on vadha. Each direction is worth 1.5; some schools count only from the bride.
Madhya nadi partners
Purva Ashadha shares the Madhya nadi with Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Dhanishta and Uttara Bhadrapada. With each of these, nadi scores 0 of 8 and none of the usual exceptions can apply: none shares the nakshatra, and none has its Moon in Sagittarius. Purva Ashadha with Purva Ashadha can take the "different padas" exception.
The texts list such exceptions, and astrologers differ on how far they soften a shared nadi. The nadi dosha explainer sets the rule out without drama.
After the table
A score of 32.5 does not promise an easy marriage, and 11.5 does not rule one out. Astrologers still look at manglik status, the seventh house, the navamsa and the dashas each person is running, and the South Indian ten-porutham method weighs the same stars in its own way. The guide to the 36 gunas shows where each point comes from. For the other rows, return to the nakshatra compatibility chart or see Revati.
