Vishnu the sustainer, and Lakshmi
Among the three great gods, Vishnu is the sustainer, the one who holds the world together. His best-known image is Narayan reclining on the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk, Lakshmi seated at his feet and Brahma on the lotus rising from his navel. His four hands hold conch, discus, mace and lotus, and Garuda is his mount. The ten avatars, from Matsya and Kurma to Ram and Krishna, belong to his story.
Lakshmi is shown seated on a lotus, gold coins falling from her hand, and on Diwali night homes everywhere welcome her. Through household occasions like the Satyanarayan katha, Ekadashi and Tulsi vivah, the image of Vishnu and Lakshmi has become closely tied to a stable, well-provided family. At the centre of Vishnu's image is order and care: the trust that everything is in its place.
