Indian folk belief holds that black ants coming into the house are a sign of plenty, while red ants point to a quarrel or an expense. It is an old household belief, not a prediction; ants mostly arrive because of sugar, moisture or the weather. In Hindi it is ghar mein cheentiyan.
What tradition says
In India the ant is the picture of hard work and patience. Many households scatter flour and sugar near an ant hole in the morning, and Jain tradition places special weight on not harming even the smallest creature. So ants in the home were usually read as a good sign rather than a bad one.

"The ant has grown wings"
Hindi has an idiom, cheenti ke par nikalna: when an ant grows wings, its fall is near, said of someone whose pride has swollen. It comes from the winged ants that swarm out after rain and soon drop their wings. It is a proverb about arrogance, not an omen for your home.
Where the belief comes from
In farming communities, ants were a weather clock. Farmers saw them carry eggs to higher ground before rain, and ants in the granary meant the granary was full, which is where the link between ants and plenty comes from. Red ants sting and hurt, so tying them to trouble came naturally.
Other cultures also make the ant a symbol of industry: in Aesop's fable of the ant and the grasshopper the ant stores food for winter, and the Book of Proverbs tells the sluggard to go to the ant and learn.
Why ants really come in
When an ant finds food, it lays a scent trail (a pheromone) on the way back, and the others follow it, forming the familiar line. Common reasons ants turn up indoors:
- sweets, oil or crumbs left uncovered,
- damp or leaks in the kitchen or bathroom,
- rain flooding their nests, sending them to dry ground,
- the search for water in hot weather.
If you find ants
Cover food, wipe the trail with soapy water or vinegar to erase the scent, and fix any leak. For a red ant bite, apply cold water; if swelling spreads a lot or you have trouble breathing, see a doctor at once. No remedy is needed.
