Basant Panchami (Vasant Panchami) in 2027 falls on Thursday, 11 February 2027. The Saraswati puja muhurat in New Delhi is the morning half of the day, from 7:02 am to 12:35 pm, because Magha Shukla Panchami begins at 3:04 am on the 11th and lasts until 3:18 am on the 12th.
There is no "11 or 12?" confusion this year: Panchami covers the whole morning of the 11th and is already over before sunrise on the 12th. What does change from city to city is the clock time of the puja window, because sunrise and midday move with longitude. The table below gives it for the main cities.
The date and the tithi
| Item | Time (New Delhi, IST) |
|---|---|
| Panchami begins | 11 Feb 2027, 3:04 am |
| Sunrise | 11 Feb, 7:02 am |
| Puja muhurat (purvahna) | 7:02 am to 12:35 pm |
| Sunset | 11 Feb, 6:07 pm |
| Panchami ends | 12 Feb 2027, 3:18 am |
The month is Magha in both the amanta and purnimanta reckonings, since this is the bright half (Shukla paksha). The full calendar entry, with the other festivals around it, is on the Vasant Panchami page.
The rule: Panchami in the morning
Basant Panchami is a morning festival. The rule followed in the North Indian tradition, set out in Nirnaya Sindhu, is simple: keep the festival on the day Magha Shukla Panchami touches the purvahna, the first half of the daytime (sunrise to midday). If Panchami touches the purvahna on two days, the first day is taken.
In 2027 only one day qualifies. Panchami starts in the small hours of 11 February, so the whole purvahna of the 11th lies in it, and it ends at 3:18 am on the 12th, so the 12th has none. That is why panchangs should agree on 11 February this time. In some years Panchami begins mid-morning, and then calendars split between two days depending on how much of the morning they require; 2027 is not one of those years.
Saraswati puja timings by city
The puja window runs from local sunrise to local midday (the midpoint between sunrise and sunset). The Panchami tithi itself is the same moment everywhere in India, but sunrise and midday are not.
| City | Sunrise | Puja window (purvahna) |
|---|---|---|
| Kolkata | 6:11 am | 6:11 am to 11:50 am |
| Guwahati | 6:01 am | 6:01 am to 11:37 am |
| Patna | 6:27 am | 6:27 am to 12:03 pm |
| Gaya | 6:27 am | 6:27 am to 12:04 pm |
| Varanasi | 6:35 am | 6:35 am to 12:12 pm |
| Prayagraj | 6:40 am | 6:40 am to 12:16 pm |
| Lucknow | 6:45 am | 6:45 am to 12:20 pm |
| Chennai | 6:32 am | 6:32 am to 12:23 pm |
| Hyderabad | 6:44 am | 6:44 am to 12:30 pm |
| Bengaluru | 6:43 am | 6:43 am to 12:33 pm |
| Bhopal | 6:55 am | 6:55 am to 12:34 pm |
| New Delhi | 7:02 am | 7:02 am to 12:35 pm |
| Jaipur | 7:06 am | 7:06 am to 12:41 pm |
| Pune | 7:04 am | 7:04 am to 12:48 pm |
| Mumbai | 7:08 am | 7:08 am to 12:52 pm |
| Ahmedabad | 7:14 am | 7:14 am to 12:53 pm |
Two patterns stand out. The east starts almost an hour before the west (Guwahati 6:01 am, Ahmedabad 7:14 am). And the south's window is longer than the north's in February, because days are longer closer to the equator at this time of year. For any other town, the daily panchang shows sunrise and sunset; for example the Patna panchang or the Kolkata panchang, where Saraswati puja is one of the biggest days of the year.
You do not need to fit the whole puja into a single minute. The tradition only asks that the worship be done in the morning while Panchami lasts, and in 2027 that is the entire purvahna.
What the day is about
Basant Panchami marks the arrival of spring in the traditional calendar and is dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of learning, speech and music. Customs vary by region, but a few are almost universal:
- Saraswati puja at home, in schools and in pandals, with books, pens and instruments placed before the goddess.
- Yellow: yellow clothes, yellow flowers and sweet saffron rice, for the mustard fields in bloom.
- First letters (akshar abhyasam / vidyarambh) for small children in many families.
- In Braj, the Holi season is traditionally said to begin on this day; Holika Dahan follows on 21 March 2027 (see our Holi 2027 explainer).
None of these require a particular minute beyond the morning window, and none require anything to be bought.
An abujh muhurat, and what our calendar says
Basant Panchami is one of the days many families treat as abujh or self-auspicious: a day good enough for a wedding, an engagement or a griha pravesh without looking for a separate muhurat. That is a living tradition and we respect it.
Our muhurat finder works differently: it checks every day against fixed rules (nakshatra, tithi, weekday, Rahu kaal, Bhadra, and blocks such as kharmas, chaturmas and combust Venus or Jupiter). For weddings in 2027, 11 February does pass those rules in New Delhi, so it appears in our list as well. February 2027 is in fact one of the year's fuller wedding months, after a January that only opens up on the 15th once kharmas ends. The day-by-day list is on the vivah muhurat February 2027 page, and the whole year, including why August to October are empty, is explained in our vivah muhurat 2027 guide.
The sky around Basant Panchami 2027
- 6 February 2027: an annular solar eclipse, not visible in India, so no sutak here.
- 9 February to 3 March 2027: Mercury is retrograde, moving back from Aquarius into Capricorn. Tradition reads this as a time to double-check communication and paperwork, nothing more.
- 13 February 2027, 10:09 am: the Sun enters Aquarius (Kumbha sankranti).
- 21 February 2027: a faint penumbral lunar eclipse in the small hours, visible but hard to notice, with no sutak.
- 6 March 2027: Maha Shivratri, the next big festival.
The full list of 2027 dates, month by month, is on the festival calendar for 2027.
Why some sites may show different times
- The window shown. We show the full purvahna (sunrise to midday). Some sites show a shorter "best" slice inside it, often based on choghadiya or a lagna; that is a choice of presentation, not a different festival day.
- City. A table made for New Delhi will be off by up to an hour in Kolkata or Mumbai.
- Rounding and the city point. Differences of a minute or two come from the exact coordinates used for a city and from rounding.
